Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 10/12/2020 (2079 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: At the very worst time possible, my husband has announced he’s leaving me and the children — and he’s not running off to be alone. He has hooked up with another woman; I had to do all kinds of research to find out who it was.

I already knew her, because she works in the same firm with him. She was a woman I actually liked, and that makes the sneaking around doubly hurtful.

Last night he told me over the phone they hadn’t slept together yet, as if that would make me feel better or make him more honourable. Anyway, he was lying, because I know him!

He referred to our “cold bedroom” and said he hoped I could find someone who was better for me in bed than him. What a joke.

Our bedroom went cold after I found out he had a sexual fling when we were engaged. It came out a year after we married.

Need I mention he’s very good-looking, funny and has a great career? No man should have been given so much — he thinks he can have whatever he wants with women, and he’s right.

I don’t want him back, but the kids are crying to have him back for Christmas. They think I must have shut him out. They don’t know it was his doing, and he doesn’t even want to come back to me.

He never liked being married, with so many women still flirting with him — sometimes right in front of me. If I squeaked about it, he’d say, “You know I like you best!”

He stopped saying, “I love you” long ago, not long after the hoopla of the big wedding and our honeymoon. Then the babies came.

How do the kids and I find peace on earth in this hurtful holiday season? — Second Best, St. Boniface

Dear Second Best: First of all, you’ll have to finally give up on this man. Let him go!

Right now, it sounds like you’re toying with trying to get him back “for the kids.”

He doesn’t want to come back and leave the new girlfriend. Note that he got his own apartment — he didn’t move in with her.

She may be the first of a number of women. He likes to be single and get around. His life is a drama again, and he’s the star.

Try to visualize your next man — a grown-up who knows how to love and give of himself, and make a great life with a wife and kids.

For a laugh, give him a name when you talk to yourself about him, like Sir Galahad. Get yourself looking forward, instead of backward.

If your parents want to give you a gift, ask them to help you buy some counselling sessions to build up your strength for a new future.

As for Christmas, the kids get two this year — one with you, and one with dad. Don’t have him over for the gift exchange and a family scene — finishing with your bitter tears in the bathroom.

The dream of the family dies hard, but this man has proved twice he’s just not husband material.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m writing for a group of girlfriends. Our friend had COVID-19 and sequestered herself so no one she knew would get it from her. The problem is she’s not coming out of hiding, like she feels ashamed!

We want to give her our love and company any way she wants it, but not to lose her. What should we do? — Loving Friends Who Miss Her, Southdale

Dear Loving Friends: She may feel she’s the pariah right now. Here’s how to let her know that’s not so: Make a formal plan to get the whole gang to take turns ringing up this cherished friend on visual programs like Zoom or Skype, where you can see each other.

Bring food and drink to the calls, and party together. Celebrate her returned health, and her continued part of this happy group of female compadres. Get her back in that fold!

Canada, U.S. both say they made gains in new trade deal that averted tariffs

WASHINGTON - Canada-U.S. Minister Dominic LeBlanc smiled widely beside U.S. President Donald Trump's trade czar in Washington on Wednesday as they touted a draft deal which appears to have averted a new round of punishing tariffs on Canada.

United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said he feels confident the agreement will protect American workers and jobs while strengthening the North American market, making the continent a manufacturing and energy powerhouse.

"We certainly, I think, have eliminated some of the irritants that we've had over the past year," he said, "We also are taking a strong foot forward."

Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement that the new deal reinforces and builds on Canada's existing trade advantages with the U.S.

Carney asks provinces to return U.S. alcohol to stores

Catherine Morrison, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:41 PM CDT

OTTAWA - Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston says Prime Minister Mark Carney has asked provinces to restock American alcohol on their shelves as Canada finalizes a trade deal with the U.S.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he would put a three-day pause on 50 per cent tariffs that would have hit an array of Canadian goods just after midnight Wednesday.

The two governments are now finalizing the language of the deal.

Carney, who briefed cabinet ministers and premiers about the draft plan Wednesday, said the deal it builds on Canada's existing trade advantages with the U.S.

Matriarchal influences run deep at House of Ma Kitchen and Bar.

Executive chef Dom Merano took inspiration from his mom’s home cooking while developing the menu for the new Exchange District restaurant — specifically Cynthia Merano’s recipes for lumpia (Filipino spring rolls) and kare-kare (braised beef and peanut stew).

“It tastes like home,” Merano says of the dishes, adding that his mom “felt honoured to be able to share her cooking with people. She was actually here prior to opening helping me roll lumpia.”

Cynthia’s photo is hung among the “Wall of Mas” at the back of the restaurant, where the mothers and grandmothers of True Hospitality staff are given pride of place.

Allen misses out on league MVP award

Taylor Allen 2 minute read Updated: 2:47 PM CDT

Winnipeg Sea Bears guard Teddy Allen has come up short in his bid to win a second career CEBL Most Valuable Player award — and he’s not happy about it.

The league revealed its award winners Thursday, with Scarborough Shooting Stars guard Myles Powell taking home the MVP honours over Allen who was the finalist out of the Western Conference.

Powell, who was also named the Clutch Player of the Year with nine target score winners, averaged 22.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists while leading Scarborough to a historic 20-4 record.

“A dude who averaged 23 on 38 per cent. You will never see me again. Lost ya credibility,” Allen commented on Instagram.

‘Frustrated’ Selkirk nurses plead for help

The province must take immediate action to increase low staffing levels that are putting Selkirk emergency room nurses at risk, a letter sent to the premier and health minister says.

The letter, sent by the Manitoba Nurses Union and signed by 35 ER nurses, detailed multiple recent incidents at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre. In one case, a nurse was stabbed with a pen by a patient who had been waiting 24 hours for care. In another case, a nurse was bitten by a patient.

“Nurses in that emergency department are extremely frustrated,” said Manitoba Nurses Union president Darlene Jackson. “This is not something that happened in the last month — or overnight — these are problems that have been growing.”

The five-page letter was sent Tuesday to Premier Wab Kinew, Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara and leaders of the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority. It contained 10 requests to improve safety inside the emergency department, including establishing safer nurse-to-patient staffing levels, eliminating the practice of “single physician coverage” in the emergency department and implementing an institutional safety officer around the clock.
