Hey there, time traveller!

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I just found out my boyfriend of seven months has other girls he sees when I’m not available. I’m so hurt! He’s a bit of a sex addict, so he wants/needs sex every day. At first, we were matched that way, but my need has settled down.

I’m so upset about these fill-in girlfriends. I confronted him, and he laughed and said: “Well, serves you right. Be there for me every day! Just move in with me, and keep me tired!”

I felt fear flutter in my stomach. I said, “I’ll have to think about that.”

Miss L., does this mean that, even if I lived with him and went away with my girlfriends or my folks for a weekend, he’d feel free to have sex with somebody else?

— Unsure About Next Move, East Kildonan

Dear Unsure: That’s exactly what it’d mean, and worse. He’s demanding daily sex as payment for being allowed to be his live-in. If you aren’t “on the job” one day, he’ll be visiting some other woman in his little black book — and it doesn’t stop at that. You can bet he’ll have a string of women, old and new, he also sees, as faithfulness means nothing to him.

This relationship with you is not about love, happiness, warmth and communication. It’s certainly not about respect. That’s clear by his actions and the way he talks down to you. It’s about in-house sexual services for him — and he’ll hold all the power.

Run from this sex junkie! Find a boyfriend who’s emotionally mature and healthy and is not looking for a woman who’ll be one notch up from a sex toy.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: Is falling out of love with your wife a sin? I promised her in church to love her until the day I died, but my love has died early, and I’m still alive.

I don’t know why my feelings died, except we got so busy with work and children that we stopped talking to each other. We were just co-parents. We stopped having fun and stopped being affectionate. She moved to a different bedroom because I snore.

Then she had a short affair, which she confessed. I didn’t really care, although it hurt my pride. It didn’t make me want her more, that’s for sure. So now we’re at the end, at least in my mind and heart. The people we’re really going to hurt are our son and daughter. Please help!

— Ready to Leave ASAP, Wolseley

Dear Ready: For both your sakes, put out the money and line up a few sessions of marriage counselling, to negotiate a kinder ending. It’s better to air out your marital problems, talk them over, and work out a peaceful friendship. It’ll be healthier for your kids (and any possible grandkids) for you to be friendly with their mother.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I had the strange luck to run into an old teacher of mine. I don’t mean old in years. I had such a crush on him in Grade 12 — and he knew it, I’m sure! Anyway, we both had no rings on our fingers — so single and available?

He mentioned he wasn’t teaching anymore — changed professions completely. I’m through two degrees and working now. Imagine my shock and amazement when I asked him out and he flatly refused me, for the weak reason that he used to be my teacher! So what? Who cares?

— Very Disappointed, St. James

Dear Disappointed: You were “forbidden fruit” when you were his teenage student, and he may have a kind of parental feeling towards you. Also, if you did date each other now, got serious and ended up married, people from your old school might wonder exactly when that relationship actually got started. It wouldn’t bother you, but it would bother him to be suspected. Consider looking for someone a lot like this former teacher, but closer to your own age with no shared history — and someone who really wants you back.

‘Quite a journey’: dozens move into transitional housing downtown

Carol Sanders 3 minute read Updated: 9:54 AM CDT

Dozens of residents have moved into transitional housing units in a former university building in downtown Winnipeg.

Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith said 42 residents have moved into suites on the third and fourth floors of a seven-storey building previously owned by Providence University College and Theological Seminary. There will be space for as many as 118 people who were in encampments or otherwise homeless.

The remaining units under renovation are expected to be ready and occupied in the coming weeks, Smith said.

“This has been two years in the making,” the minister said at a media event with residents, staff, neighbours and supporters. The building cost the province $24.4 million to purchase and renovate.

Woman died while getting wisdom teeth out; case raises questions about transparency of dental association

The parents of a 23-year-old southwestern Manitoba woman who died after receiving a local anesthetic during a wisdom tooth extraction say they are in the dark about the investigation into their daughter’s death.

Dulaney and Victoria Blatz say the Manitoba Dental Association has been unwilling to give them information about the probe into their daughter’s death, saying the self-governing regulatory body must be more transparent with the public.

“We have pushed through various channels trying to get information, but it’s nothing but stalling and sidelining,” Victoria said Friday. “This has crashed our world to pieces and we just want answers.”

Virginia Blatz went to Boundary Trails Dental Centre in Morden on Nov. 27, 2024, to have her wisdom teeth removed, but never returned home.

For Kyle Thompson, foam is where the heart is.

As a high school student at Winnipeg’s Transcona Collegiate, one of his classes required him to create a business plan. He was cleaning vehicles part-time at the Chamois Car Wash and Detail Centre, so he used the assignment to envision a car wash of his own — one with a Regent Avenue address.

Fast forward some 25 years later and that dream is a reality. Thompson is the co-owner and general manager at Flamingo Express Car Wash.

Located at 868 Regent Ave. West — east of the row of car dealerships that call the thoroughfare home and across the street from an Amazon distribution hub — Flamingo opened last month.

Woman who saved child, father from Red River uncomfortable with hero label

Scott Billeck 5 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 2, 2026

A Winnipeg woman who’s been hailed as a hero by police for saving a father and his young child from the Red River says she doesn’t feel like one.

“I’m a mom… and I would do it again,” said Jayclyn Morrissette, who was walking with her neighbour through St. John’s Park on Aug. 24 when they spotted a young girl flailing in the nearby river. “I was meant to be there and that was supposed to happen.”

Morrissette, who spoke to the Free Press Wednesday after police released details about the rescue, said she and her neighbour began looking for the child’s parents and found them at the nearby playground searching for her.

Morrissette waved them over. The father, who she said could not swim, jumped into the river first and immediately began to sink.

Dynacare labs quickly reach capacity ahead of strike

Nicole Buffie 4 minute read Yesterday at 3:06 PM CDT

Patients were being turned away from several Dynacare locations Saturday morning as people packed the labs in hopes of getting their blood collection done before workers strike.

By 10:30 a.m. the lobby at the Dynacare at 1581 Regent Ave. was standing-room only and walk-up patients were being turned away as the wait time for those lucky enough to get in creeped past two hours.

One woman got in right before workers cut off walk-ins at 10 a.m. after travelling to two other locations.

“I was driving by at 7:15 this morning and there was already a line-up to the road, so I was like ‘nope, not going there’ so I went to the one on Sterling Lyon (Parkway) and it was closed, and then I went to the one at St. Vital Mall and there had a line zig-zagging all the way through the corridors so I gave up and came back,” said Joanna, who declined to give her last name.
