The Winnipeg Blue Bombers modest two-game win streak is reaping rewards.

The CFL announced today its Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for the weekend’s four games and Bomber kick returner Jovon Johnson was honoured as the top special-teams player – one week after kicker Alexis Serna picked up the same award.

Johnson, who doubles as a starting cornerback, returned a missed field goal 118 yards for a TD in Winnipeg’s win over the Edmonton Eskimos in the game’s critical play. It was the second-longest return in club history, behind only Albert Johnon III’s 122-yard return in 2000.

Jovon Johnson also had five kick returns for 106 yards and seven punt returns for 79 yards. To top it all off, he also registered seven tackles and a pass knockdown in the victory.

B.C. Lions quarterback Buck Pierce was the offensive player of the week while his teammate, receiver Paris Jackson, was voted as the top Canadian. Earning the defensive player of the week honours were Montreal Alouette linebacker Chip Cox.

The Bombers return to the practice field on Wednesday in preparation for their crucial game on Thanksgiving Monday in Hamilton against the Tiger-Cats. Winnipeg is 5-8 and trails the second-place Ticats, 6-7, by two points.
