Hey there, time traveller!

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I feel like my boyfriend is always looking at other women! My friends have told me I’m crazy, and just paranoid, but I can’t help it. Before COVID, whenever we were out together and a good-looking woman went by, his eyes would wander and rest on her body.

I’m thought to be a beautiful woman myself, by people other than my boyfriend, but that doesn’t make me any more secure. I know he’s always dated women who look like they could be models or movie stars, and that he has changed partners fairly often. But, during the pandemic, he isn’t looking so much — maybe out of fear.

I’m crazy about him — he’s very funny, charming and good-looking — but I can’t relax and just ignore the wandering eyes. I know it’s there — his need to look at other women — and it will be back when COVID is gone. How can I get through to him, without being pushy, about how much the habit hurts me?

— Sensitive Woman, Tuxedo

Dear Sensitive: He doesn’t just need just one good-looking woman. He’s distracted by all beautiful women that come across his line of vision, and clearly makes no secret of it. This is the wrong kind of man for you.

Why would you want to be with a man like this in the first place? Imagine being pregnant, feeling sick or tired, or not up to making yourself look like the model he requires by his side. You need a man who loves you inside and out and makes you feel loved and secure at all times.

Right now, you may feel your shelf life is about the same number of months it’ll take to get the population vaccinated.

Look, you need a man who values your personality, your heart, your intelligence and your spirit, not just your looks. Here’s the good news: Most men are not shallow and rude like this man, and don’t make their partners feel insecure.

If you can’t stop feeling you are only beautiful and valuable on the outside, a good psychologist could help get you to that place of self-worth and security.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I have a crush on a woman who works in a grocery store where I go. Thank Goodness it didn’t close down for COVID! I’ve been going there for three years now, and I have a good rapport with her. But she’s been wearing a diamond engagement ring. I always look at it when she’s ringing up my bill. Then, it was gone just last week!

I blurted out: “Oh I see you’re not wearing your ring anymore!” She blushed and said, “No, and it’s for the best.”

Then she smiled, and it felt like the sun just came out.

I want to ask her out so badly, now she’s free, but I’m so afraid she will say no. Then I won’t be able to go back to the store without being embarrassed. Still, I’m afraid I can’t waste time, or someone else will ask her. What should I do? Is she going to think I’m being inappropriate?

— Now’s My Chance?, North End

Dear Now’s My Chance? At least give her a few weeks! Don’t jump on this too fast. Maybe she fought with her man, and they will get back together. Or, she may just need a little time to get over the break-up.

So what can you do? This is the time to become more friendly and start buying groceries every few days instead of a big shopping once a week. Make conversation about anything — the weather, how busy they are, something in the news or the neighbourhood — just small talk and a smile. You’ll know if and when she’s flirting back. Then’s the time to pounce!

Wait times for MRIs getting worse in Brandon, Dauphin

Rylee Gerrard 3 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

BRANDON — Wait times for MRI scans have surged in the Prairie Mountain Health region during the last two years.

Despite a campaign promise by the NDP in September 2023 to increase the number of allied health professionals capable of administering diagnostic imaging in northern and rural areas, wait times for MRIs have increased dramatically in Brandon and Dauphin.

Median imaging wait times tripled at Dauphin Regional Health Centre between 2024 and 2026, increasing from eight to 24 weeks, according to the province’s wait time dashboard.

The Brandon Regional Health Centre median wait times for MRI scans more than doubled during the same period, from nine to 23 weeks.

Bombers offence stalls in 22-19 loss to Elks

Joshua Frey-Sam 7 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:19 AM CDT

It was a microcosm of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ season to this point: a first half that burned bright only to be doused in cold water.

The Bombers began the first leg of their mid-season gauntlet with a 22-19 loss to the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium in the Alberta capital on Friday night.

Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo orchestrated an eight-play, 54-yard drive that set up a 40-yard game-winning field goal by Vincent Blanchard that snuck inside the left upright with zeros on the clock.

The drive, which was plagued by poor tackling by the Bombers defence, came after Bombers kicker Sergio Castillo tied the game at 19-19 on a 53-yard boot with 1:41 remaining in the contest.

Residents fear mailbox crime sprees

Morgan Modjeski 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

Some North End residents are concerned new community mailboxes will become a target for vandalism and crime after the base of one was recently lit ablaze — before it was even installed.

The community mailboxes started to show up on Andrews Street within the last two weeks. Some have been installed, while at other locations, only the concrete foundation is in place.

“They just dumped them on the boulevard,” said Stephen Giesbrecht, who lives beside one of the boxes in the St. John’s neighbourhood. “They dumped them on the corner and then they were gone.”

One of the concrete slabs has already played host to a fire and some of the hardware needed to install the mailbox melted.

Canada vows dollar-for-dollar tariff retaliation, suspends trade talks with U.S.

Catherine Morrison, The Canadian Press 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:27 AM CDT

OTTAWA - A last-ditch effort to reach a new trade deal before a midnight tariff deadline failed Friday, as Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended talks with the United States and summoned his negotiators back to Ottawa.

The decision meant new 50 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian exports to the U.S. took effect at 12:01 a.m., and Carney vowed Canada would retaliate with equal measures of its own.

"In recent weeks, we made important progress toward improving Canada's position as having the best deal in the world with the U.S.," Carney said in a statement just before Trump's tariff deadline.

"However, that progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians."

The trolls inside the Conservative tent

David McLaughlin 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

The Conservative Party of Canada has a troll problem. And it’s coming from inside the tent.

Once, trolls existed only in imagination. They were figures of mythical proportion, big and small. They lived solitary lives under bridges, in caves, or forests. They were considered dim-witted and mean. Best avoided.

Today, they are real, unavoidable, and ubiquitous on social media. They are anything but solitary. There are tribes of them out there and tribal is how they think and post. As for dim-witted and mean, others can opine but they are uniformly mean and dismissive.

Mean to anyone who disagrees with their views. Dismissive of any view but their own. They distribute questionable, at best, facts and opinions grounded in hostility towards anything or anyone deemed disagreeable or heretical to their world view.
