Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My wife really told an old auntie on my side of the family where she could go! She tried to interfere with my wife’s strict punishment of our son, who stole something big, and got caught.

Auntie then phoned Grandma, who is the boss queen of our matriarchal family, and ratted my wife out. Then Grandma called me, demanding I force my wife to make an apology to Auntie. Believe me, Auntie’s not going to get anything like that from my wife. “Over my dead body!” my wife told me. She did not grow up in an old-world family, like I did.

I want peace. My wife says if I take Grandma’s side and start demanding her to apologize to Auntie, I can kiss our marriage goodbye. She means it. What can I do? I love my wife and family, but I and don’t want thegood relationships with my elders to end.

— Caught in the Middle, West End

Dear Caught: Your wife is obviously a match for Auntie and Grandma. Your best bet is to say to your wife: “You do what you need to do, and I’ll support your decision, but I draw the line here: I will not stop talking with my auntie and grandmother.”

Then do some “underground” work, consulting your other aunts and uncles. Someone will likely be able to broker a peace between your wife and these older women. The whole clan has been dealing with these family authorities for a long time. You can bet worse fights have been resolved in the past.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I walked all the way home from my girlfriend’s house after she teased me sexually for hours, and refused to have sex with me again. I had to stop for a pizza halfway home, to calm down. I ate the whole thing. This is not the first time this has happened, by any stretch. My girlfriend is the worst teaser. She gets a thrill out of leaving me in a painful state for hours.

This is my first real girlfriend. I’m 17 and not very good-looking. I’m afraid I won’t get another girl for a long time. I’m scared to break up with her, and then have no one again. What she’s doing to me is mean, and I can’t take much more, but I don’t want say goodbye and be alone all summer either.

— Being Teased to Death, River Heights

Dear Teased: If this girlfriend did go all the way, she might get pregnant, particularly if you just used a condom. You don’t mention having investigated, or if you had on hand, any reliable birth control — or that your girlfriend has taken any steps either. That may be carelessness, or maybe you’re not her “chosen” one for first sex.

Do you really think having this girlfriend is better than nothing? Keeping her around makes you unavailable to meet other girls who would care for you and not enjoy teasing you like this. Bottom line: You need to make more friends, particularly of the female sex.

A summer job with other students in a retail store or fast-food outlet, for instance, would introduce you to a group of people your own age. So would would sporting or recreational activities. Then you’d be able to forget this first girlfriend, who seems to enjoy tormenting you, and find someone better.

U of M students call for ban on far-right group

Some University of Manitoba students are calling on their school to ban a far-right group from campus after posters promoting mass deportations were found during the summer break.

More than 50 people rallied on Wednesday, the first day of classes, to make known their concerns about a group called the Dominion Society of Canada.

The protest was organized after a supporter of the self-described nationalist group posted a video over the Labour Day weekend that shows him putting up flyers in Fort Garry.

“Canada is a really beautiful country and I have been welcomed here by a lot of beautiful people and it’s been amazing, but when I see harmful rhetoric online and now, on campus, it gives me a lot of anxiety,” said Ela Ancheta, an arts major at U of M.

Closure of Nomads field massive upset for North End

Joshua Frey-Sam 5 minute read Updated: 8:49 AM CDT

The North Winnipeg Nomads have a flag on the field.

The long-standing minor football club was recently informed that its field is unfit to host games and that it would need to find a new home for its five youth and adult teams until repairs are made to the playing surface.

“Our board has made every effort to address the condition of our home field,” the club wrote in a statement. “Unfortunately, following a professional assessment, the field has been determined to be unsafe and unstable for our athletes.”

All five of the club’s teams will play their 2026 season at Frank Whyte Field, part of the Northwood Community Centre, with no confirmed date for when they can play on their home field again.

‘Dynacare sucks’: premier muses about bringing lab services back into public system

Carol Sanders 5 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 9, 2026

Premier Wab Kinew says Manitoba may bring Dynacare’s diagnostic lab services back into the public system rather than continue to sign contracts with the for-profit company.

“Dynacare sucks. They’ve made an absolute mess of this situation,” the premier said Wednesday, the day the company’s 350 employees reported back to work after the labour board halted their strike after just one day.

Kinew first made the remark about Dynacare in a CBC radio interview Wednesday morning and added he is “not happy with them.”

Dynacare performs the majority of non-emergency blood and urine tests in the province.

Supportive housing operator sued after man with dementia walks away

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

The Public Guardian and Trustee of Manitoba is suing a health services company after a man with dementia under its care allegedly wandered away from an apartment it operates for vulnerable people and was later found face down in a puddle — unresponsive, hypothermic and severely injured.

The public trustee — a provincial government agency that, among other duties, makes financial and personal care decisions for vulnerable adults who cannot do so themselves — filed the lawsuit against Cambridge Health Inc. and a related numbered company in the Court of King’s Bench earlier this month.

The agency did so on behalf of a now-38-year-old man, who has been under its care since 2018, as a result of his frontotemporal dementia. The disease often starts in mid-life, rather than old age, as is the case with most other forms of dementia.

The lawsuit alleges the man, who resided at a Henderson Highway apartment complex where Cambridge Health operated a supportive residence for people with complex behavioural health issues, was in a common area of the home at about 4:30 p.m. on April 3 last year.

City rapped for taking five days to remove animal carcass

Morgan Modjeski 2 minute read Yesterday at 8:34 PM CDT

A Winnipeg resident said she’s upset it took the city five days to retrieve a dead fawn from her yard after she reported it to 311.

Amy Gelhorn said she and her family noticed the animal carcass in her garden on Saturday. She called 311 and was told it would be picked up after the long weekend.

“It was removed this afternoon,” the north River Heights resident said Thursday. “So it took six days to remove it and we had to basically phone every day.”

She said neighbours on both sides of her house told her they saw the animal acting strangely on Friday and reported their concerns to 311. It’s believed the animal died overnight. As the days dragged on, the body continued to rot.
