DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My wife just loves sex at the moment. I’m not quite as interested right now because I’m so tired from work, and sex feels like more physical labour.

I have told her lately I’m up for some fun, as long as she does the work. She already knows she can have me any way she pleases. I’m easy.

But I haven’t felt as willing lately. Recently she’s muttered something about marrying an old man. I’m not old — just overworked and tired. The difference between our ages is only 11 years, but it seems a lot more at times.

Last night, to try to make up with my poor wife, I brought her home what’s supposed to be one of the hottest sex toys on the market. She looked at it, and said, “So, this is your stand-in now? Can I be expecting anything from you personally?”

Please help us. I’m an idiot, but I do love her.

— Lacking Finesse, St. Norbert

Dear Lacking: Your wife may feel you’re just telling her to “have at it” with the sex toy, without you being an active part of the lovemaking. She is probably not after an orgasm, so much as connecting with you romantically and otherwise. She seems to need more personal interaction — sweet words, the closeness of being skin-to-skin, the laughing and loving.

Consider this: it might make sense to plan your intimate encounters for weekends or even first day of the week before you’re feeling too fatigued from your work week.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My girlfriend likes to swim with fish. She gets really bored with going on fishing trips with me, and dives right in to swim and make the fish scatter.

I would rather fish with the guys anyway. I told her so and she said, “Good. Fishing is actually cruel and that’s why I don’t eat them.”

Yet she happily eats hamburgers, and those were once cows. Is she even worth fighting for?

— Fisherman’s Nightmare, North Tuxedo

Dear Fisherman: Rather than pointing fingers at each other and calling each other down, agree to disagree and go your separate ways. Then make an effort to date someone who actually likes fishing and enjoying the fruits of your angling.

It doesn’t make sense to try to convert people who think differently about these things.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: Help. My lazy teenagers just lie around the house, claiming they can’t find work, and their mother doesn’t push them.

My boys are in grades 11 and 12 and I can’t trust them once they’re out of school to do anything useful, unless they have jobs to take up their time.

I would have offered them jobs at my grocery business again, but last summer they were so useless my other seasonal employees (university students) had to work extra hard to make up for their ineptitude.

Their mom just gives them bits of house and yard work to do and pays them so they have spending money. But what does that teach them? I can’t recommend them to any of my friends as employees because they’re so lazy.

— Unhappy Dad, West End

Dear Unhappy Dad: The boys might not be so lazy if they were working for their dad’s friends who would expect more of them, and would complain if they weren’t putting in a good effort.

So consider calling two or three of your pals to see if they know of any jobs your boys could take on this July and August.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My girlfriend and I split up at the beginning of June for one month to “think things over,” in her words.

It seems I did all the thinking, while she secretly had another guy sneaking over at night.

We finally got together for the big scheduled talk after our month apart. I asked how she used her time, and she said, “You can meet my new guy if you like. He’s waiting outside for me on his bike.”

I thought she was kidding, but no, there was this hefty dude wearing a stupid motorcycle helmet sitting on a bike as if he expected her to be out any minute.

I grabbed her by the arm as she walked towards him and she fell down by the bike. That was it for us.

The problem is now this woman is phoning me every night trying to get me back. She thinks I really care, or I wouldn’t have gotten violent. Now what?

— Mad as Hell, Winnipeg

Dear Mad: This is the kind of relationship where somebody — likely you — ends up in court. So your next move should be a sensible one. Cut yourself off from all contact with your recent ex-girlfriend.

At the same time, ask your physician to help you get personal counselling around your issues with anger and violence. It’s simply unacceptable behaviour, whatever the situation, and could land you in court and possibly jail in the future.

Parents praise water-safety education

Morgan Modjeski 4 minute read Updated: 8:21 AM CDT

Winnipeggers at Kildonan Park Pool were offered education about water safety on Sunday and one parent who had a previous drowning scare said the lessons could save a life.

One of several events this summer hosted by the Manitoba Coalition for Water Safety as part of National Drowning Prevention Week, the poolside event saw volunteers from the Lifesaving Society educating people on things like how to throw a rescue line and how to “swim to survive” which requires participants to fall in a pool, tread water for one minute and then swim 50 metres to safety.

Ashley Shepherd said she and her six-year-old son Logan, who was taking part in some of the exercises Sunday, had a close call at Birds Hill Park in 2024, with the incident happening in seconds.

She recalled how she turned around to help her young daughter who had lost her footing. A second later, her son fell off a floaty into the water and was quickly swept away. She went after the boy in a flash, but found herself tangled in seaweed and panicked, going under herself, a nearby couple coming to their rescue.

Animal rescue worker reportedly killed in dog attack

Morgan Modjeski 4 minute read Friday, Jul. 17, 2026

Police are investigating after a woman died on the Sandy Bay First Nation, reportedly after being attacked by dogs.

The woman was identified by family as 37-year-old Amanda Nobiss.

“It’s just disbelief,” said Sherri Nobiss, her mother, in a phone call. Her family is devastated by the loss. “You just want to know what has happened.”

She said Amanda was a dedicated animal advocate who was volunteering with K9 Advocacy Manitoba in the community at the time. Amanda, who was from Winnipeg, is pictured with a dog in almost all of her photos on social media.

Bombers battle back to beat Redblacks in OT

OTTAWA — For three and a half quarters, it looked like it was going to be a night Dru Brown would want to forget.

And in some ways, he still might want to erase Sunday from his memory because it wasn’t overly pretty.

But in the end, Brown got his revenge and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers recovered from a sloppy start to escape the nation’s capital with a 36-34 overtime victory over the Ottawa Redblacks.

The game literally went down to the wire as it remained tied after two overtime mini-games and had to be decided by alternating two-point conversion attempts from the 3-yard line — a first in CFL history as the new overtime format was introduced this season.

Mosque’s restorative justice program helps newcomers find their way

The Masjid Bilal is a chunky grey building just off Logan Avenue surrounded by warehouses and railyards. It looks more like a bunker than a mosque.

But on a summer Friday afternoon, its green-and-white carpeted interior is humming with activity. Two men in white robes and flat woolen caps are seated on the carpet poring over a copy of the Qur’an. A few young boys dodge through hallways, poking curious noses into open doors. At the back, next to a table piled with prayer mats, two girls in hijabs share schoolyard gossip. In the kitchen, women are cooking up pots of rice and chicken for people who will soon arrive for Friday prayers.

The Masjid Bilal is a community hub for members of Winnipeg’s African diaspora as well as Muslims from many other countries.

It’s also home to the Bilal Community and Family Centre, an innovative, community-centred nonprofit that is meeting vital needs for newcomers in this city.

Search continues for two boys presumed drowned

1 minute read Yesterday at 2:02 PM CDT

Two boys are presumed drowned in Nutimik Lake in the Whiteshell.

RCMP and community search-and-rescue teams are still trying to locate the children, aged 10 and 13, who got caught in fast-moving rapids in Nutimik Lake near Sturgeon Falls Trail in Whiteshell Provincial Park on Saturday.

Lac du Bonnet RCMP received the report of possible drowning at 12:40 p.m. July 18. Police immediately went to the scene, along with local fire personnel and emergency responders, but didn't find the boys despite extensive patrols on the water and on the shoreline, police stated in a news release Sunday.

Manitoba RCMP Underwater Recovery Team  and the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team were deployed to assist in the search. Drones were also used.

Homeless standstill can’t be addressed until province, city collaborate

Dan Lett 5 minute read 3:19 PM CDT

What we have here is a basic failure to understand the dynamics of homelessness.

Last week, the Free Press documented the friction between Osborne Village residents and business owners and homeless individuals seeking refuge at Oak Table, a drop-in centre that provides food, shelter from the heat and cold, and access to social services.

Oak Table operates out of space in St. Augustine Church, located on River Avenue just east of Osborne Street. The aforementioned residents and business owners, as well as employees of a daycare that operates out of the same church, all expressed concerns about discarded drug paraphernalia, garbage and open drug use by the people visiting Oak Table.

It’s not hard to sympathize with people who are tired of dealing with this mess and mayhem. Still, it should be said that Oak Table, a private not-for-profit organization affiliated with an umbrella social services agency called 1JustCity, is not in the wrong place.
