Concerned about injustice on their school jungle gym, St. Vital students spent months researching upgrades to make playgrounds more accessible for children in Manitoba.

Darwin School is dismissed for the summer, but one of its teachers plans to resume an advocacy project after the break.

“It’s not fair,” 12-year-old Selena Wei said about the fact one of her classmates — along with other children who use wheelchairs — can’t fully experience the pea-gravel playground at 175 Darwin St. and others like it.

“A playground is a really big part of a child’s life. It’s where they experience most of their outside time and where they’re the most social,” Selena said.

A nail-biting 100-98 victory over the Edmonton Stingers wasn’t the club’s most impressive 40-minute effort of the season, but perhaps it was the most resilient after trailing the entire first half then outlasting the Stingers in Target Score Time to steal one on the road.

Head coach Mike Raimbault has harped on the importance of his team staying in the moment, especially when times get tough. When the Sea Bears have lacked in that area — which has always come away from home — they’ve paid the price in the form of some crushing losses.

But Sunday was different. There was no panic, even when the Stingers’ lead stretched into double digits, and Winnipeg was rewarded for it.

Jets depth chart takes shape as off-season heats up

That Kevin Cheveldayoff was expecting the pace of the off-season to shift gears came as little surprise.

And while it appears as though there are still a few questions left unresolved when it comes to the Winnipeg Jets roster this fall — including a massive one involving starting goalie Connor Hellebuyck and his future with the organization — the depth chart is taking shape.

When he spoke to members of the media at the conclusion of Jets development camp, the general manager spoke about prioritizing a new contract for restricted free agent Cole Perfetti, who filed for arbitration on Sunday in what was more of a procedural move than an indicator of how negotiations might be going.

As Perfetti stated unabashedly after his exit interview, the Jets forward wants to be part of the long-term solution and there should be an opportunity for the player and the team to find common ground on a long-term deal with the Jets before an arbitration hearing takes place.

Singles Soundtrack Turns Twentybit.ly/singles_20

IF you're looking for some of the defining artists of the '90s and want to know why alternative music compilations for movies were all the rage for a while, check out the soundtrack for Cameron Crowe's film Singles which turns 20 this year.

Why does a soundtrack from a hip rom-com from 20 years ago matter? While Crowe's film may not be the best thing to come out of that decade, it does offer a snapshot of a music scene that was on the cusp of exploding and changing popular culture forever.

Although most of the music on the grunge-heavy soundtrack can be found elsewhere, there are some gems, including Pearl Jam's Breathe (recorded during the Ten sessions with drummer Dave Abbruzzese) and live fan favourite, State of Love and Trust, along with Mudhoney's cynical Overblown, Chris Cornell's stripped-down Seasons, and Mother Love Bone's epic Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns.
