Hey there, time traveller!

DOUG Brown, the veteran defensive tackle for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, has been named the East Division finalist for defensive player of the year in the Canadian Football League.

Brown, who was also nominated as the club’s Most Outstanding Player and was its unanimous selection as top Canadian, was the only Blue Bomber player to be nominated to represent the East in the CFL player awards to be announced and presented Grey Cup week in Montreal.

The Free Press weekly columnist — who won the CFL’s most outstanding Canadian award in 2001 — will be up against B.C. Lion defensive end Cameron Wake, who led the league with 20 quarterback sacks in 2008 and will be the odds-on favourite to win the honour.

Brown, the 6-foot-8, 290-pounder from New Westminster, B.C., had one of his most solid seasons ever in 2008, recording six QB sacks, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and 43 tackles overall. He also had two pass knockdowns.

Other Bomber players nominated for awards but who did not advance as East Division nominees were tackle Dan Goodspeed (top offensive lineman), guard Brendon Labatte (top rookie) and Graeme Bell (special teams).

Here are the West and East Division nominees as announced this morning by the CFL:

Most Outstanding Player: QB Henry Burris, Calgary Stampeders; QB Anthony Calvillo, Montreal Alouettes

Top Canadian: Receiver Kamau Peterson, Edmonton Eskimos; Receiver Ben Cahoon, Montreal

Defensive Player: Wake, B.C.; Brown, Winnipeg

Offensive lineman: Gene Makowsky, Saskatchewan Roughriders; Scott Flory, Montreal

Top Rookie: Receiver Weston Dressler, Saskatchewean; Receiver Prechae Rodriguez, Hamilton

Special Teams: Kicker Sandro DeAngelis, Calgary; Kick returner Dominique Dorsey, Toronto Argonauts
