EAST SEMIFINAL REPORT
Next: Bombers vs. Eskimos, Sat. Nov. 8th, Noon.
GOT MILT? Here’s Bomber legend Milt Stegall when asked if Saturday’s tilt could be the last time fans see him in action:
“You never know. You’re fishing. You’re looking for a whale but you’ll only get a minnow. I can guarantee this will be the last time this Bombers team will be assembled on this field this season. How’s that for a guarantee?”
OUCH UPDATE: Head coach Doug Berry said the rehab of LB Ike Charlton and safety Ian Logan has gone well and that they may be back on the field on Wednesday. UP CLOSE: Bomber fans should be reminded that six players — Kevin Glenn, Joe Smith, Zeke Moreno, Dan Goodspeed, Brendon LaBatte, Obby Khan and Anthony Malbrough will be at the St. Vital Centre Bomber Store this Thursday from 6-8 p.m. As well, because so many of you are asking: any fan who has a season ticket also has a ticket to Saturday’s playoff game as it was part of the package.
ED TAIT THINKS YOU SHOULD KNOW…
ALL-STAR MISSES: Hard to make the case that an 8-10 team should have more all-star picks — especially since the Bombers’ six pack was more than the Saskatchewan Roughriders had named out West and the same as the first-place Calgary Stampeders — but three guys we think deserved more consideration were rookie guard Brendon LaBatte, receiver Romby Bryant and defensive back Jovon Johnson. LaBatte started 17 games as a rookie and was the Bomber rookie nominee, Bryant had virtually the same production as Arland Bruce III — who was selected — on 27 less catches and Johnson was as steady as any DB in the East.
MR. IRON FIST: CFL commissioner Mark Cohon has fined Bomber defensive end Kai Ellis $1,000 for his comments leading up to the Montreal game in which he said he wanted to put Alouette GM Jim Popp ‘in a coma’ and take out some of their high-priced talent. Ellis was cut by the Als in September.
“As a player rep I got to see the fine handed out by our commissioner for a making a comment about a general manager who’s not even on the field of play,” said Doug Brown when asked about trying to get to Eskimo QB Ricky Ray. “So, you have to be very careful about what you say. We wish to hit them hard in a very safe and legal manner.”
DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS: Couple of things to clarify: we said in Monday’s paper the Bombers were 6-2 in their final eight games, which they were, but included the Banjo Bowl loss as one of those defeats. In fact, the Bombers were 6-3 in the final half of the season, including the Banjo Bowl, but we inadvertently omitted their loss in Calgary in Game 17.
As well, a loyal reader suggested it was inexcusable for us not to mention Tyrone Jones on the weekend in our list of CFL icons who passed away this year. He’s right. My bad.
ADMIRATION SOCIETY: Here’s Eskimo defensive assistant coach A.J. Gass — the former middle linebacker — on Bomber RB Fred Reid: “Reid is probably the most underrated running back in the league,” Gass told The Edmonton Journal. “If you give him more touches he’s probably your league-leader. He’s got a lot of speed and he’ll be a handful.”
And here’s the Bombers’ Brown on facing Eskimo interior linemen Patrick Kabongo and John and Dan Comiskey:
“That’s the best interior three that we play in the CFL, period,
