WINNIPEG — With most players resting or in meetings, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers did a little trimming of the roster Tuesday evening.
The team announced the release of import DB C.J. James and non-import DB Chayce Elliott, as all eight CFL clubs are required to get their training camp rosters down to 68 players (excluding 2011 draft picks and CIS free agent signings) by 11 p.m.
To that end, the Bombers also announced the retirement of import WR/KR Tim Brown. Brown, a dynamic returner out of Rutgers, broke his foot at the club’s mini-camp this spring and was still on the mend when camp started.
Winnipeg also released non-import WR Liam Mahoney Tuesday.
The Concordia-product was the Bombers’ sixth-round pick last month, but was slowed by a hamstring injury during rookie camp. Rather than wait for Mahoney through a 2-3 week rehab, the team decided to part ways with the Canadian receiver.
Earlier in the day, the club signed import Andre Jones. He was in camp Tuesday, but was merely a spectator on the sidelines. At 5-foot-11, 190-pounds, Jones is listed as a defensive back, but he has seen time as a wide receiver during his college career at Akron.
The Bombers are back to training camp workouts Wednesday, starting at 10:30 a.m.
