WITH nine rookie receivers in camp, the Blue Bombers are drawing on some of their veteran experience to help the youngsters wade through uncharted waters.

Slotback Terrence Edwards, one of the best pass catchers in the CFL in 2010, has taken to the ‘fatherly’ role in a big way. Sunday night, he addressed the team — specifically the rookies — about what it takes to be a great pro in Canada. The three points he hit on: Accountability, dependability, and the ability to take coaching and transfer it to the field.

“I’m here to work with ’em,” said Edwards. “At one point in time I was them, and I know what it’s like to be a rookie. I’m here to help them.”

The biggest message Edwards tries to get across: The campus lifestyle is over. “You have to realize that in the professional ranks you’re going against guys who have kids, who have mortgages — they have to fight for their livelihood,” he said.

“It’s not like you’re on a scholarship anymore. This is how you take care of home. Guys are fighting for a cheque.”

Rookie Kito Poblah says he’s purposely seeking out Edwards for a little more knowledge, hoping the veteran’s experience will wear off on him as he gets acclimatized to the CFL game.

“I talked to all the older guys; they’ve been in the system,” he said. “I’m just asking questions and (taking) advice about what they would change if they were a rookie. Most of the guys here are very helpful with that.” Head coach Paul LaPolice is asking most of the vets to address the club this training camp.

TOUGH START: Monday was the first day of full workouts — meaning it was the first full day in pads. The extra protection led to a few more collisions, though, which led to a few more injuries as the four-hour session moved on. Veterans DT Doug Brown (thigh), C Obby Khan (knee), DB Jonathan Hefney (ankle), WR Aaron Hargreaves (leg), and DB Deon Beasley (knee) all had to leave early Monday. They join rookies WR Damian Sherman (hamstring), WR Liam Mahoney (hamstring), and LB Rico McCoy (illness) in sick bay.

FRONT-RUNNER: It’s rare for LaPolice to tip his hand regarding position battles and roster spots, but he did have this to say about tackle Andre Douglas: “I think there will be a good competition between Kelly (Butler), Glenn (January) and Marlon Winn for the other spot,” the coach said, deliberately leaving the second-year import lineman out of the mix. Unless things change dramatically, write in Douglas’ name as the starting left tackle with a permanent marker.
