UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The Winnipeg Jets’ defensive corps may be depleted, but their last line of defence is standing tall.

Goaltender Ondrej Pavelec has been brilliant through two periods of play against the New York Islanders at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, kicking out 27 shots through 40 minutes in a game the Jets lead 1-0.

Missing defencemen Tobias Enstrom, Mark Stuart, Ron Hainsey and Derek Meech and still without Eric Fehr, the Jets are battling valiantly with a made-over defensive corps that includes Brett Festerling and Mark Flood, called up Wednesday from the St. John’s IceCaps.

Evander Kane has the Jets’ lone goal, his fifth of the season, burying his own rebound behind Rick DiPietro. Kane has been busy as he also hit the post on a penalty shot and then got into a fight with Travis Hamonic in the final minute of the first period.
