A Progressive Conservative government would invest in an $8-million, 60,000-square-foot recreational complex in south Winnipeg.
Party Leader Hugh McFadyen made the announcement Saturday morning at Judy Eastman’s campaign office in Southdale.
The multiplex would include two full-size ice rinks, a fitness centre and auditorium.
The new facility would meet a growing demand for ice time and recreation space in the expanding south end of the city, McFadyen said.
The government would work with the community and city to determine its location, McFadyen said, hinting he would like to see it built east of the Red River.
“There’s a significant shortage with the development at Sage Creek and throughout southeast Winnipeg, which makes that the most likely location,” McFadyen told reporters.
The project would be funded through the PC’s Community Investment Fund, a five-year, $25-million commitment announced earlier in the campaign, McFadyen said.
On Friday, McFadyen announced a $4.2-million overhaul of the St. James Civic Centre as part of that fund. More projects from the fund are expected to be announced throughout the campaign, McFadyen said, adding there will be money left over to fund other priorities after the election.
McFadyen was flanked by Eastman, along with other south Winnipeg candidates Gord Steeves (Seine River), Mike Brown (St. Vital) and Rochelle Squires (Riel).
The new complex would benefit families and organizations in the area struggling to find ice time, said Brown.
