The Manitoba Liberals would pass a law setting out standards of care in personal care homes and hire inspectors to make sure the new provisions are being met, party leader Jon Gerrard promised on Friday.

In a speech to the Laurier Club, Gerrard said a Liberal government would also stop the practice of prescribing unsafe drugs, such as anti-psychotics, to seniors in care homes as a form of restraint.

Over-prescribing such drugs is known to lead to strokes and death, he said.

“Protecting our most vulnerable seniors in Manitoba is paramount,” Gerrard said.

“We are the only party talking about taking care of vulnerable seniors who require care the most and we have a duty to do better.”
