POWER RANKINGS
One man’s totally subjective rankings of the eight CFL teams to date this season (last week’s rank in parenthesis):
1. (1) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (12-2): One-sided Grey Cup rematch with the Stamps was a snoozer.
2. (3) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (8-6): Still too up and down, but now tied for first.
3. (2) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (8-6): Something just isn’t quite right with the champs.
4. (4) B.C. LIONS (7-7): Massive win in Edmonton. Climbing up the charts.
5. (7) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (6-8): Three straight wins vault them over their latest victims.
6. (6) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (6-8): Crushing last-second loss to the Lions stings.
7. (5) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (6-8): Tempted to say they’re better than this, but little evidence lately.
8. (8) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (3-11): Big-time overhaul needed in the Big Smoke.
JUICY NUMBER — 32
The number of seasons that have passed since Saskatchewan finished first in the West Division, dating back to an 11-5 campaign in 1976. The Riders have been tied for first seven times this season but have yet to grab sole possession of top spot.
FYI
"ö For those of you scoring at home, the Argos are now 3-19 since firing Rich Stubler last September. Said end Jonathan Brown to the Toronto Sun: "I don’t know when it is going to happen, but something good is going to come out of this. Sometimes you have to lose and you have to go to the bottom before you get back up to the top."
"ö From the Whatever Makes You Happy dept.: Several Riders are now sporting Mohawk hairstyles as a sign of team unity. "Some guys grow playoff beards, we’re growing Mohawks," receiver Andy Fantuz told the Regina Leader-Post. "It’s good to see a bunch of guys buying into it. They don’t care what other people think and it shows that we’re in this together."
"ö The Ticats have been outscored 42-0 in the first half of their last two home games.
SAY WHAT?!
"Anybody who thinks we’re the same team as last year is sadly mistaken. And, if they think our record is because we play in the East Division, they’re sadly mistaken." — Alouettes CB Davis Sanchez after Monday’s spanking of Calgary
