Blue Bomber diehards have been waiting a long time for Sunday — the official opening of training camp and the chance to get a first-hand look at new head coach Mike Kelly and the troops.

And here’s the added bonus for Bomber fans and readers of the Free Press: Just like the football team, our online coverage is undergoing a considerable facelift and will be unveiled Sunday at winnipegfreepress.com.

"It’s been a long time in planning to change the site and turn it into a one-stop shop for Blue Bomber fans," said John White, Free Press deputy editor-online. "We brought in the players from the Free Press sports department and picked the best elements from other sites we saw as fans to bring to our site."

Our new-look online Bomber coverage features, among other things:

A new, easy-to-navigate landing page;

The usual collection of stories from football writers Ed Tait and Gary Lawless and award-winning columnist Randy Turner, along with the regular columns of all-star Bomber defensive tackle Doug Brown, archived all season;

More video reports, both during the days leading up to home games but also from the road;

The Cover-it-Live feature that allows fans to interact with FP writers while the games are unfolding;

Slideshows from our all-star photography department and videographers;

A daily ‘Bomber Insider’ Blog from Tait and Lawless;

A ‘Fan’s Take’ blog after each of the 18 regular-season games;

A live Free Press pre-game show before home contests that helps set the stage for the action;

The chance for fans to submit their own Bomber photos and/or videos;

Why are we beefing up our online Bomber presence? Simple…

"We understand the fans’ connection to this team," said White. "And when you look at the good fan forums out there like OurBombers.com and The Extra Point on the Bombers’ own site, they successfully established a community and a sense of ownership with fans."

Feel free to email White with any suggestions at john.white@freepress.mb.ca.
