Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 24/10/2010 (5460 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
In a season plagued by injured quarterbacks, Saturday’s events should come as no surprise to Winnipeg Blue Bombers fans.
The Blue and Gold were black and blue at the most important position on the field following the 27-8 loss to the Toronto Argonauts at Canad Inns Stadium — a loss that dropped the Bomb Squad to a 4-12 record and out of the post-season picture. For the second straight year, Winnipeg was not only eliminated from playoff contention, but the club also has to deal with questions about who will lead the offence next year.
Before we get to that, a recap of Saturday’s pain in the pivot position:
Starter Steven Jyles left the game with 2:45 remaining in the first quarter after a big hit and forced fumble by Argos LB Kevin Eiben. The 28-year-old was in noticeable pain on the field and went straight to the locker-room with his right arm pinned to his side, forcing backup Alex Brink into the game.
The next time fans saw Jyles, he was in street clothes with his right arm in a sling.
Brink left the game in the third quarter after he hurt his throwing shoulder on a takedown by Argos DE Ronald Flemons. He tried to stay in the game but couldn’t locate his throws properly, Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice said, and so the team turned to rookie third-stringer Joey Elliott.
What in the name of Buck Pierce is going on here?
“Freaky things happen — you always have to be ready,” Elliott said of his first action in the CFL. He went 8-of-16 for 75 yards and an interception.
“We did a few good things out there, but I have a lot to learn,” Elliott said.
The early report on Jyles: A suspected separated shoulder. The early report on Brink: A possible separated shoulder.
“I don’t know the extent of it,” offered Brink, adding his shoulder kept popping out as he continued to play. “How many weeks, days — I won’t know that until (today).”
Both players will be evaluated today, but if they aren’t ready to practise this week for the game against the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday, Elliott — a 24-year-old Purdue grad — could make his first professional start.
“I don’t want to be in any rush to decide that,” said LaPolice, who now has to start thinking about what the QB picture will look like for the 2011 season. “Let me find out (about the injuries) first.
“We’ll have conversations and try to establish who we have to bring in. You want to bring people here who can help you. We’ll have to see what we have and what’s out there.”
Rumours have already begun to surface that Kerry Joseph, a Grey Cup winner with LaPolice in Saskatchewan (2007), could be an option for the Bombers. That seems unlikely, though. LaPolice has squashed Joseph speculation already once this season — when the oft-injured Pierce suffered a season-ending dislocated elbow in the Labour Day Classic last month.
Despite LaPolice’s connection to Joseph, the Bombers are reportedly not interested in bringing in the 37-year-old quarterback.

And the fourth-string QB is…
With Steven Jyles and Alex Brink sitting on the bench discussing various shoulder rehab strategies, the Bombers turned to third-stringer Joey Elliott. What would happen if the former Purdue pivot had to leave the game, though? Here’s LaPolice on what the emergency plan was:
“We have had a couple scenarios with a couple other guys throwing the ball around a little bit, but I’ve never seen a team go through three (quarterbacks),” he said.
LaPolice wouldn’t offer up who would go in, but a good bet would be SB Terrence Edwards, who played quarterback in high school.
As a group, the Bomber trio of Jyles, Brink and Elliott went 18-of-32 for 150 yards and no touchdowns.
