FOR the fourth consecutive game, Max Hall was the starting quarterback for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, in Montreal on Monday.

And for the fourth consecutive game, Hall threw to receiver Clarence Denmark more successfully than to any other receiver.

Denmark led Bomber receivers in catches with five and receiving yards with 102 in a 34-27 Bombers win at Stade Molson — the fourth game in a row that Denmark has led the Bombers in those two categories.

Denmark now has 23 catches for 346 yards in his last four games and his 40-yard TD reception in the second quarter on Monday was emblematic of the kind of clutch catches he has been making in this last little stretch.

So, if all that sounds to you like Denmark and Hall have developed some special receiver-quarterback chemistry, you’re not the only one.

“Denny is just a guy who can take the top off. He’s a fast guy and he’s proven he can be reliable,” Hall said on Monday.

The admiration is mutual, said Denmark. “When Max gets it going, it’s pretty easy. He threw a good ball on the touchdown and gave me another good ball later on,” Denmark said.

“Once you get that timing down and quarterback trusts you, then you just have to make plays.”

DENMARK wasn’t the only one making big plays for the Bombers on offence on Monday.

For the second week in a row, tailback Will Ford had a big game. A week after rushing for 156 yards against the Calgary Stampeders, Ford proved it was no fluke with 93 yards against Montreal.

Ford has had single runs of 70 yards and 69 yards in each of the last two weeks respectively — and that 69-yard run midway through the fourth quarter on Monday was decisive, setting up the game-winning touchdown two plays later.

Ford appears to be staking a late-season claim to be No. 1 at tailback on the Bombers depth chart when the team heads to training camp next season.

Set to become a free agent after this season, Ford says he’s not taking anything for granted. “I feel like if I do what it takes to help this team win, it will all work out at the end of the day. That’s what I’m trying to do — I’m not worried about the job, it will take care of itself at the end of the year. As long as we’re winning, everything will work out.”

SPEAKING of winning, the 3-12 Bombers need to do nothing but that for the final three weeks of the season, and hope 6-9 Montreal loses their final three games, if Winnipeg is going to complete one of the most unlikely runs to the playoffs in recent memory.

The Bombers finish the regular season with a home game against Toronto Saturday, a game in Toronto next week and then a home game against Hamilton.

Montreal finishes at home against Hamilton this week, in Guelph against Hamilton next week and then in Toronto against the Argos on the final weekend.
