Brayden Yager is set to be a sponge. As the Winnipeg Jets top forward prospect prepares for his second training camp since he was acquired in a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins for Rutger McGroarty in August 2024, Yager knows that he’s going to be cutting his teeth in the professional ranks this season.

MLB-best Brewers swept in September like they were to start this season as Rangers roll

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — This is the same way the season started for the Milwaukee Brewers, long before they had the best record in the major leagues.

Now in September, and still on the verge of being the first team to clinch a playoff spot, the Brewers (89-58) were just swept in three games in Texas by the injury-plagued and playoff-chasing Rangers. It was the first time for Milwaukee to be swept since being outscored 36-14 in the first three games of the season at the New York Yankees in late March.

“We haven't had too many of these," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said after their 6-3 loss in the series finale at Texas on Wednesday. "It stinks, but I don’t think there’s any team in baseball that over 300 games that’s only been swept three times.”

Only one sweep last season

INGRAM, Texas (AP) — Nearly three decades after holding their final training camp in the Hill Country of central Texas, the San Antonio Spurs returned with a greater sense of purpose and hope.

The Spurs came to Ingram Tom Moore High School on Wednesday to uplift the spirits of the students impacted by the flash flooding on July 4 that killed at least 136 people.

They succeeded.

Screams erupted when Spurs star Victor Wembanyama took his first giant stride onto the Warriors court and the 1,000 students from Ingram’s high school and middle school and Hunt Middle School cheered throughout the hourlong event.

Unhappy at post-game celebrations, Wales coach wants another shot at Canada

It appears Canada's 1-0 win over Wales on Tuesday has left Craig Bellamy with a score to settle.

In his post-game availability at Swansea.com Stadium, the Welsh coach was unhappy with what he saw as Canadian celebration on and off the field before the final whistle.

"I really hate losing, more than I like winning. And there's a big difference in that," Bellamy said after the men's soccer friendly. "And I see them celebrating at the end, I'm like (long pause) 'I hope I see you in a World Cup. I hope I see you again.'

"But I have to also as well be gracious. Thank (Canada coach) Jesse (Marsch) for shaking his coaches' hands before the final whistle," he added sarcastically. "I have to get used to that. I don't want to get used to it. But yeah, I have to take it on the chin."

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Few rookies face higher expectations than Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty, and there was great anticipation about his NFL debut this past Sunday.

Then it actually happened and ...

Jeanty rushed for 38 yards on 19 carries in Las Vegas' 20-13 victory over New England.

Not the kind of numbers he produced last season at Boise State when Jeanty led the nation with 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns and was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.

No-looks and back shoulders: Matthew Stafford is showing he’s healthy and ready to lead Rams again

Greg Beacham, The Associated Press 5 minute read 7:54 PM CDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Even after missing nearly a month of training camp and sitting out the preseason, Matthew Stafford had zero trouble getting up to his old tricks in the Los Angeles Rams' season opener.

Stafford also pulled out a couple of new tricks that showed he's still growing in his 17th NFL season.

The 37-year-old quarterback pulled off his latest no-look pass during the Rams' 14-9 victory over Houston, hitting Puka Nacua for a 25-yard gain after misdirecting the Texans' defense to clear space for his receiver down the seam.

With instincts honed over a long career, Stafford said he made the decision “in the moment” to try the audacious throw.

Cubs’ Jameson Taillon returns from the injured list to start against the Braves

The Associated Press 2 minute read 5:58 PM CDT

ATLANTA (AP) — The Chicago Cubs reinstated right-hander Jameson Taillon from the 15-day injured list Wednesday and he will make his 20th start of the season in the series finale against the Atlanta Braves.

Taillon was placed on the injured list on Aug. 27 (retroactive to Aug. 25) with a left groin injury. He is 9-6 with a 4.15 ERA this season.

Taillon made a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Iowa on Sept. 4 and allowed three runs on six hits with one run and six strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.

“I think that was the best case scenario from what happened (when he was injured) in Anaheim,” manager Craig Counsell said. “I think we're in good shape. He basically missed one start and got a shortened start in Iowa. I think he's pretty much all the way there.”
