‘I feel great on the ice’: Barron back as Jets face off against Dallas

Ken Wiebe 5 minute read Thursday, Apr. 2, 2026

DALLAS, TEXAS — Morgan Barron felt it was both necessary and important to take a stand, even if there were unintended consequences he had to deal with.

The Winnipeg Jets forward emerged from concussion protocol to suit up in Thursday’s game against the Dallas Stars after being on the receiving end of a heavy right hand from Colorado Avalanche defenceman Josh Manson.

Following the morning skate, Barron explained why he took exception to the hit Manson delivered, resulting in a minor penalty for interference.

“I didn’t have the puck. I think he got a two for it, that was kind of what I thought was the appropriate call,” said Barron, who started the game on the fourth line with Isak Rosen and Parker Ford. “I don’t think it was anything more than that.”

OGDEN - Canada's Matt Dunstone will be playing for a gold medal on Saturday at the world men's curling championship.

The Winnipeg-based team defeated Scotland 9-7 in a thrilling semifinal Friday evening, scoring a deuce in the ninth to go ahead 8-7 and then stealing one in the 10th to beat Ross Whyte's squad.

The teams were tied 3-3 after five ends, Scotland went up 5-3 in the sixth and Canada scored three in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. Scotland responded with a deuce in the eighth to go ahead 7-6.

Earlier in the day, Canada defeated Italy's Stefano Spiller 9-7 in a qualification game.

Jets’ playoff hopes dimming with loss to Dallas Stars

DALLAS – The Winnipeg Jets picked a bad night to have too many passengers.

After winning four of the previous five games — including a tidy effort against the league-leading Colorado Avalanche on Saturday to open the road trip – the Winnipeg Jets were mostly overwhelmed in this battle with a Central Division rival that was looking to get its mojo back as they worked through a lacklustre stretch of hockey.

Just when you thought the Jets might be catching the Dallas Stars at a good time, it turned out to be the complete opposite.

A Stars team that had managed just one victory in the past seven games and two in the past nine came up with a dominating effort and won this one in a cakewalk, handing the Jets a 3-0 defeat that was damaging to their flickering playoff hopes.

Teddy Allen wants to leave the past in the past.

For parts of two seasons, Allen delivered moments of ecstasy to Winnipeg Sea Bears fans with his play on the court, leading the club to the playoffs in its inaugural season while rising to acclaim in the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Allen, the league’s most valuable player, became the face of the franchise before it all came to a surprising and screeching halt early in the 2024 season, when the Sea Bears released the star guard/forward.

On Thursday, nearly two years after the fact, Allen — now the Sea Bears’ newest signing — said all the right things as he tiptoed through a series of questions about the abrupt way his last tenure with the team ended, and how a new one is about to begin.

There will be a steady stream of smiles, hugs and handshakes when the Winnipeg Jets walk into Nationwide Arena on Saturday.

That’s standard operating procedure when Rick Bowness is in the building, thanks to the bond so many members of the Jets formed with him during his two seasons behind the bench in Winnipeg before he stepped away from coaching to focus on his health and the health of his wife Judy.

“He is an incredible human being. It’s great to see him back behind the bench doing what he loves and excelling,” said Jets captain Adam Lowry.

“You just see the motivation, and you see how hard the guys play for him. He is a great coach and demands a lot but it comes from respect. He loves you as a player and a person and those are the coaches you love to play for.”

Have yourself a week, Tristan Peters.

Nearly two decades after Corey Koskie recorded the final hit of his big-league career, another Manitoban is beginning to write his own story at the highest level.

If the past seven days are any indication, it’s going to be a real page-turner.

Peters, the pride of Winkler, started this MLB season with a bang, belting his first career hit last Saturday in Milwaukee — a line-drive double to left field off Brewers right-hander Chad Patrick.

All signs pointing to bloated boondoggle of a World Cup

Canada’s senior men’s soccer team dropped one place to 30th in the latest FIFA ranking, released Wednesday.

Now, rankings, like political polls, are snapshots in time and tell us little about how a group of players — affected by injuries, returns from injuries, new call-ups and individual streaks of form, good or bad — will fare against Uzbekistan on June 1, for example, or against Bosnia and Herzegovina 11 days later in a home World Cup.

The United States, too, dropped a spot to 16th, swapping places with Mexico, now in 15th. Again, these numbers are not informed by rigorous data, so we can’t read too much into them.

What we can do, however, is examine recent results and anticipate what FIFA would consider its World Cup nightmare: the tournament’s North American co-hosts crashing out at the group stage.

Diamondbacks outfielder Jordan Lawlar headed to injured list with fractured right wrist

The Associated Press 1 minute read Yesterday at 5:57 PM CDT

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Jordan Lawlar was placed on the injured list Friday with a fractured right wrist after getting hit with a pitch during Thursday's 17-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

The 23-year-old hit the first homer of his career in the third inning — a solo shot to left field — but was hit on the wrist by Osvaldo Bido in the seventh. Lawlar was in obvious pain, but stayed in the game to run before being taken out for a defensive replacement in the eighth.

Lawlar is considered one of the D-backs' top young players and looked as though he might be primed for a breakout season after getting six hits in his first 18 at-bats.

The D-backs called up catcher Adrian Del Castillo to take Lawlar's place on the roster. Arizona also called up right-hander Taylor Rashi and designated veteran right-hander Joe Ross for assignment.

Portland, which is welcoming a WNBA team back to the city after 24 years, selected veteran forward Bridget Carleton with the first pick in Friday's expansion draft.

Guard Julie Allemand, who played last season for the Los Angeles Sparks, was selected by the Toronto Tempo with its first pick.

The Tempo won a coin flip and opted to take the sixth pick in the college draft on April 13 over the top pick in the expansion draft. So Portland went first on Friday and will have the seventh pick in the college draft.

Carleton, who has played for the last seven seasons for the Minnesota Lynx and averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds a game last season off the bench, was an unrestricted free agent.

Twins endure a pregame power outage on a cold, rainy day to make for a happy home opener

Dave Campbell, The Associated Press 4 minute read Yesterday at 9:35 PM CDT

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have a lot of work — and winning — to do to begin to win back their fan base.

This unusual home opener, culminating in a comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, was a good start.

With the tarp covering the infield during a drizzle-altered batting practice session on Friday, the ballpark suddenly went quiet when Target Field and the surrounding downtown area lost power. The outage resulted in a delayed start by nearly an hour.

But the crowd, later announced at about 94% capacity at 36,042, didn't seem to mind even despite the 38-degree afternoon temperature. The pregame happy-hour special — $2 beers, $2 hot dogs, $2 selected snacks — that was supposed to end at first pitch was extended through the second inning after the lack of power prevented concession sales. The fans roared after each bank of lights came back on during the ramp-up period.
