Hey there, time traveller!

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m crazy about the horses and love to bet. I enjoy being in a wagering milieu, and also love playing serious poker. I can afford it, and I don’t have a wife or steady girlfriend, and no kids. I’m not hurting anyone. But last night my younger brother (I’m in my early 30s) took me out for coffee and said he knows I’m “deeply into gambling” and had the nerve to ask me how much money I was spending on it, counting trips to Vegas. I told him to mind his own damned business, and finally shut him up by asking about his sex life with his hot young wife. He left.
I’m having fun. Between this and golfing, my life is great. When I want to see a woman I have a few sex buddies and it’s casual fun. I think I have the perfect life. Why would he get in a snit and interfere?
— Deeply P-Oh’d Brother, Tuxedo
Dear Deeply P-Oh’d Brother: At this point, you are happily married — to gambling. You haven’t hit the tipping point yet. I once knew a recovered gambler who told me about having to put his family’s home up for sale to pay off his debts to bad people — or else. This man also eased into trouble the way you are, over a number of years.
If your brother got up the nerve to talk to you, he’s probably not the only one who loves you and is truly worried. At least investigate the stages of gambling addiction online. It’s good you’re not hurting anyone else other than yourself, but gambling is keeping you from having a relationship and a family. And what happens when you do start losing big? The Gamblers Anonymous number for meetings and counselling is 204-582-4823.
