DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I hope it’s not too late, but I want to put out a warning to any last-minute Valentines. You need to pay attention. This is coming from a guy who used to screw up, and paid for it dearly. I used to blame it on having too much work, but the truth is I just didn’t care enough, or maybe I didn’t get it.

Last year, I hurt my wife’s feelings deeply. She gave me a book she had a graphic designer make, that told the story of us meeting. I went out and bought her a gift card, after she gave me the book — too little, too late and not the least bit personal, when you’re basically saying “buy it yourself.”

The gift card got a cool “thanks” and she went to bed and shut the door. I slept on the couch that night and we did not get “cosy” for a while after that. The truth is, women really do care about these holidays. I know this may sound a bit crass, but I think it is fair to say most would like us to do something for them on Feb.14.

My wife told me she felt a gift or a special action, was a symbol of appreciation for her and all she does for our home and family. I felt pretty stupid and embarrassed, and I’m not a guy who likes to admit those things. So, my message today to the guys is: Go get a card, some flowers, their favourite treat, or maybe if they have a hobby, get them something related to that. More of us need to do something. Thanks, Miss L.

— Finally Got It, St. Norbert

Dear Thanks: It was generous of you to share your embarrassing situation, and what you learned. No doubt things will go much better for you and your wife in gift-giving situations now that you’ve talked openly and you really understand. Romance is important to many people — both male and female — and marriage is no guarantee these days.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My girlfriend wants two kittens for Valentine’s Day. I asked around at work and found a woman with a pregnant mama cat. Their family knows the male cat who “did the magic.” Because I have no real kittens in a basket for her yet, I cut out kitten pix from a cat magazine, and put them in a big card, along with the phone number of the lady with the pregnant cat I’ve contacted, and made a “reservation for two.” Think the pictures will do?

— New Boyfriend, River Heights

Dear New Boyfriend: Your girlfriend will be delighted, and she’ll probably be able to pick out the two kittens she likes best, when they arrive. Perhaps the woman from your work will let her visit here and there, until the kittens are ready to take home.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I received something unexpected in my mail recently. It was a Valentine from an old flame from college. He said he’s “single again” and has never forgotten me, and wondered if we could have chat on Valentine’s Day. He gave me his cell number to call.

I’m single with no children and remember him as being a nice guy I dated for a few months at age 19, until he moved away to finish university in another province. Now he’s living back here. What do you think about calling him? Should I or shouldn’t I?

— North Kildonan

Dear Should I: Yes, do it! Why not, out of curiosity more than anything? How exciting! At best you will have the start of some great chats, and maybe meet one day when it’s COVID-safe.

At worst, it will be boring and a bit stilted, and after you catch up on what you did with your lives so far, you’ll say bye-bye, and get on with your day, with a little smile on your lips. How many people get to hear from their old flames on Valentine’s Day?

Towing company hands stolen car back, but not to owner

By Matthew Frank 4 minute read Friday, Oct. 9, 2026

A Manitoba man says he is dumbfounded after his car was stolen, impounded by a Winnipeg towing company and given back — to someone that wasn’t him.

Cody Lamb lives in the western Manitoba community of Douglas, about 18 kilometres east of Brandon, but spends weeks away from home working on oil rigs in Alberta.

The 24-year-old says on Sept. 11, while away for work, he heard from his girlfriend who told him his car wasn’t in their driveway. Lamb reported the car stolen to Brandon RCMP the same day.

After filing the report, he heard from Steinbach RCMP on Oct. 1 that his car was recovered that day in the community of Mitchell, roughly five km west of Steinbach.

Final hurdles are moving on in your mind and life

Maureen Scurfield 3 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I just ran into my former husband with his new woman. It was a shock. She looked nothing like me — not nearly as good. In fact, she’s the opposite of me — red-haired, freckled, tall and skinny like a rake. I’m short, dark, with golden skin from my Italian background. That was what my husband used to say he loved in a woman.

Does that mean he lied — that he really didn’t like my looks and secretly longed for the opposite? That seems crazy to me. But I should mention that in our last miserable years together he didn’t even want to hold me in his arms and look at me. He sometimes slept at his office (or so he said) because he was “too tired to drive home.”

He could have been elsewhere — like in some other woman’s home — because he always used his cellphone to call me, not his office line.

How can I forget about the man I loved so much and finally move on?

Bombers beat Stamps, claim season series

1 minute read Yesterday at 9:01 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Calgary Stampeders 33-28 on Saturday night in front of a sell-out crowd at Princess Auto Stadium.

With the win, the Blue and Gold improve to 8-8 and bump up to fourth in the West Division standings. If the Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-7) lose to the Montreal Alouettes (12-3) on Monday, the Bombers will move up to third.

With the loss, the Stampeders drop to 8-9 and fall to fifth place which has them currently on the outside of the playoff picture.

The Bombers now just need to finish the season with at least the same record as Calgary or Saskatchewan to qualify for the post-season since they own the tiebreaker over both West Division foes.

Puerto Vallarta boards up as Hurricane Simon hits Category 4 strength

The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 9:51 PM CDT

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) — Simon has strengthened into a powerful Category 4 hurricane as it barrels toward Mexico’s coast.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Saturday that Simon’s maximum sustained winds increased to 150 mph (240 kph). A storm of that strength or greater is considered a major hurricane.

The center said it expected Simon “to be near or just inland” of Mexico's west-central coast on Sunday. The hurricane could bring as much as 10 to 20 inches (25-50 cm) of rain over parts of southwestern Mexico, with some areas in the states of Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco receiving up to 30 inches (76 centimeters).

“This rainfall will produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain,” the center warned in a bulletin that also urged residents to take immediate action to prepare as tropical-storm conditions were expected to arrive Saturday afternoon.

Phoneless concert a beautiful chance to bask in moment

Jen Zoratti 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

Outside the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, digital billboards flashed fans their singular photo op for the night: “I took this photo before I saw Phoebe Bridgers: The Lost Tour 2026.”

It is, as it is for so many other people, my only documentation of a concert by one of my favourite artists. The American singer-songwriter — who I discovered at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in 2018 — has had a meteoric rise in the past few years, winning three Grammys in 2024 as one third of Boygenius, the indie-rock supergroup rounded out by Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, and opening for Taylor Swift on select dates of her titanic Eras Tour.

Now, Bridgers is touring in support of Lost Weekend, her third album and first since 2020’s Punisher. It’s a feat of a record, a richly textured meditation on loss and grief, written in the aftermath of the death of her dad, with whom she had a complicated relationship.

So she is in a position to not only play multiple sold-out arena shows, but also insist that those shows be phone-free.
