DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My former love — a woman like me — has come back to Winnipeg from British Columbia with her new partner. This relationship looks like a real problem just waiting to happen.

I ran into this ex and her girlfriend yesterday. I have lost a lot of weight and I’m looking pretty good these days. Straight away, my ex was flirting with me right in front of her new woman. Now she’s been phoning me to get caught up (so she says).

What does she really want with me? She already has someone in her life and bed. It’s making me mad, but I can’t resist her calls.

The trouble is she broke my heart two years ago when she took off with a woman she met online. It took me too long to get over her. Now she’s back and I feel those stupid fluttery feelings in my stomach. Help.

— Here We Go Again, Winnipeg

Dear Here We Go Again: Some lovers cannot be forgotten, so the feeling can really only settle down, especially given enough distance, but it doesn’t totally die out. Unfortunately, it can still flare back up quickly.

As long as you’re entertaining this ex’s calls, she’s enjoying it. She’s obviously not feeling guilty in regard to the partner she currently has. But what is this doing to your heart?

She’s got two love interests going at once and you have none. Tell her to go back to B.C. and break some hearts there. At the very least you have to tell her to stop the phone calls. It’s enough

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My wife and I both have a month off from work to relax and try to get pregnant up at our cabin. To do this, I think we need the cabin to ourselves, but friends and relatives have already heard we’re going there for four weeks. We have a big cabin with a boat and water skis, and people usually come up and have a ball with us.

How do we tell them at this late date to rent their own cabins this summer, when they’re counting on us to entertain them? We’ve got serious baby-making work to do.

— Too Busy For Visitors, central Manitoba

Dear Too Busy: Babies tend to get created faster when people relax, enjoy their lives socially and spend a lot of time “playing” at the right time of the month. Still, it can take quite a few months to get pregnant — or it can happen right away.

So who knows — if you “get busy” without protection now, your wife might be pregnant within a few weeks. Just relax and let the pregnancy be a natural surprise. It comes when it comes.

Meanwhile, accept visits from close friends and relatives who want to spend time with you. Nothing would be worse than forbidding everyone to visit “because we’re trying to make a baby” and then it doesn’t happen all summer.

Every home has a story, almost without exception.

That’s certainly the case with a sprawling bungalow situated amid a huge, beautifully treed lot in North Kildonan, says Glen MacAngus of Royal LePage Top Producers.

“When this home was built in 1957, it was a pretty good size,” he says of the home, which sports an impressively wide footprint. “Today, it checks in at 3,390 sq. ft. due to a pair of remodels. The first was in the early 2000s, while the second was in 2018.”

Suffice it to say, the well-maintained home is anything but a throwback to its late-’50s origins.

More often than not, it seems the city is willing to pass the buck upwards to the provincial government — while also being equally willing to download it onto individual home and business owners.

Don’t get burned by ex’s flirtations

Lights, sports and land: a wish list for West Broadway

Rebecca Chambers 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

Mayor Scott Gillingham would like us to phone our MLA regarding safety concerns in West Broadway, because homelessness, housing and addictions are a provincial concern.

This explains a lot.

Previously, Gillingham’s over-reliance on policing as a solution to social ills has puzzled me, in an if-you-only-have-a-hammer-everything-looks-like-a-nail way. But since the mayor seems unaware of the ways his office could lessen the harms and promote social cohesion in West Broadway, I’d like to help him out.

First up, some low hanging fruit. The streetlights in West Broadway are spaced illogically far apart. My block has two streetlamps, both on the same side of the street. Once the sun goes down, there are portions of street that are completely black. I cannot see someone approaching, let alone recognize them or assess risk.

Few consumer-facing industries illustrate the potential and pitfalls of artificial intelligence more than the financial services sector.

Generative AI — the technology powering chatbots that can seemingly think and provide reasonably correct, if not insightful, answers to our questions — is arguably a wonder of the modern world.

The potential for providing financial advice is indeed palpable. Then again, it’s not hard to imagine the technology running amok especially with people’s money.

A recent report on digital banking services provides insight on the risks and opportunities.

Telecom on defensive after about 90 emergency calls fail over several hours

Chris Kitching 7 minute read Thursday, Jul. 23, 2026

Bell Canada — Manitoba’s 911 service provider — is facing questions about reliability and redundancy measures after an hours-long outage outside Winnipeg, caused by a severed fibre optic cable, prevented dozens of calls from getting through Wednesday.

Bell spokeswoman Elise von Scheel said backup systems that reroute 911 calls when an outage occurs due to equipment damage also experienced “issues” after a third party cut the cable during construction “near Winnipeg.”

“Manitoba’s 911 system relies on legacy architecture that does not support the failsafes that newer systems have, which is why Bell is in the process of upgrading the ecosystem to next generation 911,” von Scheel wrote in an email.

“All Manitoba public safety answering points are planned to be migrated to the new system by the end of 2026. Migration to NG911 is the fastest and most effective remediation to prevent instances like this in the future.”
