DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I’m a musician, and I swore I wouldn’t get involved with anyone else this summer after having my heart broken again.

The woman who ditched me took off for a music scene elsewhere. I hope she never comes back! I heard by the grapevine she already had another guy during the months she was with me. I don’t know who, but I can guess.

My problem is another woman is chasing me hard already. Although I need the sex and she’s fun, I’m too afraid to see anyone. I’m still feeling messed up. Sometimes I hear love songs and cry like a fool. Still, my saving grace is playing music — something I’m good at and love. It heals me to an extent, but the really sad songs can bring me way down, even while on stage.

I’ve also just been asked to join a new band. Part of me wants to do it, but another part of is afraid to because I’m still so broken up inside. Women can be easy to come by in this scene, but I just don’t have the strength to take a chance at getting hurt again. Sorry for sounding like a big baby!

— Smiling Still Hurts, Winnipeg

Dear Smiling Hurts: Ask the band who want you if you can play for a week with them and see how it goes. If it does work, it could a positive step to help keep your head above water emotionally.

Also, talk to your physician about your situation, and do not soft-pedal it, as so many guys tend to do. Tell the truth about your serious emotional pain and all the symptoms. You may need some medication. Also, counselling support could help you sort out the painful feelings and cope better with them.

It’s time to figure out why things have not worked out for you romantically, so far. You may be falling for the wrong type of person, and could change that with professional help. You may also have some problematic behaviours of your own that don’t go down well with people in relationships. It’s always a good time to get rid of those!

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I inherited a batch of kittens from a family, whose mama cat couldn’t feed them. It has been crazy but fun for my husband and me.

The trouble is I’m so attached now, I want to keep them all, but we don’t live on a farm and it isn’t possible for other reasons as well. I feel sick about losing these little characters soon. I love them already. Please advise!

— Cat Mama, Manitoba

Dear Cat Mama: If you do some planning right away, you might be able to give them to friends and neighbours, and then be able to visit and keep track of them as they grow up.

The trick right now is to get images of the mother and the kittens up on social media, to spread the word. Talk about each one’s character and get people interested in different kittens. Then invite potentials adopters over for a little summer get-together to meet the kittens.

This can really work. I once went to a neighbourhood puppy-petting event, where people were invited several times to come and play with a very big batch of canines. Some people were repeat attendees! Many people in the neighbourhood adopted and you could spot neighbours walking together with their growing pup brothers and sisters.

Bombers manage to hand Redblacks another loss

Taylor Allen 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:35 AM CDT

It looked bad. Real bad.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros made his return to the lineup on Friday night against the Ottawa Redblacks, and he was once again the victim of a blindside hit.

The one he suffered in Hamilton on July 5 appeared relatively modest in comparison and yet, it sidelined him for a month with a neck injury.

So when Redblacks linebacker Lucas Cormier came around the edge unblocked and hammered Collaros from behind in the second quarter, you could hear a pin drop inside Princess Auto Stadium.

Don’t be a big loser — check out Real Love Summer Fest ReunionBig Loser takes the stage at 8:20 p.m. tonight as part of the Real Love Summer Fest Reunion, a one-day event put on by the indie promotion company, which ran the festival in the Interlake area for a decade until last summer’s final edition near Teulon.

Bookers Gil Carroll and Adam Soloway have programmed a full day of music at Blue Note Park (220 Main St.), the outdoor venue adjacent to Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club.

First up at 4 p.m. is folk-rock songwriter tofusmell, followed at 5 p.m. with a rare performance by indie-songwriting darlings Animal Teeth, a group with several summer fest bills under its belt. Up-and-coming pop-rockers Synthetic Friend take the stage at 6, followed at 7 by the fun electronic dance pop of French Class.

After playing with his full band at last month’s Winnipeg Folk Festival, Amos the Kid will perform a solo set at 8 p.m. Sans band, the performer shows off his affable roots as a Gord Downie acolyte with catchy earworms to match.

Ratcheting up heat can lead to cold feet

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I came home early from my family’s beautiful lake cottage with my heart broken in pieces. I’d taken my new love out there and he seemed so happy to go with me. Friends of mine at the lake helped by offering me their romantic cabin while they were away on a road trip.

After two days of bliss on the beach, walking the sandy shores at twilight, plus some great lovemaking, our trip felt absolutely magical to me. It was like the honeymoon I hope to have with him someday. I happily told my guy that over breakfast in the morning. His face fell.

He went out right away for a “long run,” and then he went again for a second one right after lunch. He didn’t come back for many hours, so I finally went down to the kiosks at the beach at 5 p.m. looking for him, asking if anyone had seen my guy.

One guy said, “Yeah, he was with your other visitor today — the red-headed girl.” I’d had no other visitor. I suddenly realized he must have met another woman at the beach, and passed her off as my friend. I just lost it!

Men’s recovery home dedicated to ‘homeless hero’ Faron Hall’s memory

Scott Billeck 14 minute read Friday, Aug. 14, 2026

Faron Hall never got the chance to begin recovery. Once heralded as Winnipeg’s “homeless hero” after twice plunging into the Red River to save strangers from drowning, Hall told St. Boniface Street Links executive director Marion Willis shortly before his death in 2014 that he wanted help for his alcoholism.
