Nothing preventing you from giving him a ring

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I'm upset this year about Valentine's Day as it looks like my boyfriend of six years is about to fall down on the job again. For the second year in a row, he did not offer me a diamond ring. The first year (2014) I forgave him because he didn't know he was blowing it, but last year he did it again, knowing full well what he was doing. I'm the kind of guy (yes, we are a gay couple) who wants to settle down with a really good man like him and adopt a child or two. He knows that I long for it.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m upset this year about Valentine’s Day as it looks like my boyfriend of six years is about to fall down on the job again. For the second year in a row, he did not offer me a diamond ring. The first year (2014) I forgave him because he didn’t know he was blowing it, but last year he did it again, knowing full well what he was doing. I’m the kind of guy (yes, we are a gay couple) who wants to settle down with a really good man like him and adopt a child or two. He knows that I long for it.

Other years I’ve done up a great dinner with wine, romantic music and the whole bit, and he’s come home with nothing more than flowers and a lame watch. Last year it was flowers and a new iPad, which I whipped across the room. I ran to the bedroom and locked it. He went home to sleep at his mother’s. We made up two weeks later because we can’t live without each other.

What do I do this year if he doesn’t come through with a proposal? It’s getting to be a horribly embarrassing joke. I cried myself to sleep last night just because I have the jitters. I do love this man and we had a long talk this week where he didn’t commit to anything beyond living here in my condo. This is his last chance. A few months ago I got so angry about it, I got some backup in the form of a casual boyfriend who is much more the marrying kind, but my focus is still on my main boyfriend I love so much. — Three Strikes, St. Boniface

Dear Three Strikes: Why do you have no say in this proposal? On Valentine’s Day, you propose to him, and if he doesn’t accept, give this other fellow waiting in the wings his chance on the stage of your life. Even if you get a ring from this fellow you love, you may stay stuck at that stage for another 20 years. Either he’s just not the marrying kind, you’re not the final one for him or he really doesn’t want to get domestic and have a family with you, or anybody.

Manitoba selects consulting firm Nueconomy as India trade rep

The Manitoba government has hired an India-based consulting firm to act as its new trade representative in the South Asia nation.

It will announce its choice of strategic consulting firm Nueconomy today.

The company — with offices in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore — has already begun working with the province. One of its directors attended Fi India, a food ingredients event, last week to promote Manitoba crops such as pulses, according to a company LinkedIn post.

Representatives from Nueconomy weren’t available for comment by print deadline Thursday.

Goldeyes back in playoffs and attendance on the rise

Tip your cap to the Winnipeg Goldeyes — they’re having a fantastic season, both on and off the field.

From a pure baseball perspective, the Fish are flying high. Wednesday’s 6-2 victory in Fargo was the latest in a second-half surge that has helped punch their ticket to the American Association playoffs.

Winnipeg has officially locked up a post-season spot, meaning it will play for keeps for the 22nd time in 32 seasons.

The final five games of the regular season — including Thursday’s finale against the RedHawks in North Dakota, followed by four dates in Kansas City from Friday through Monday — will determine the final seeding and the Goldeyes’ first-round opponent.

‘Where are they going to go?’: encampment policy blamed for homeless people sleeping outside thrift store

Scott Billeck 5 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 2, 2026

The owner of a Portage Avenue thrift shop says the city’s encampment ban has pushed dozens of homeless people from tent communities to spaces near her store.

Susan Lockhart, who runs Just Like New to You at 635 Portage Ave., says anywhere from 25 to 50 people can be found at any given time behind the store and along the back lane stretching between Sherbrook and Furby streets.

“Where are they going to go?” she said Wednesday from her shop. “I was just here on the weekend and I couldn’t get to our back door. There were people everywhere. Mattresses.”

Earlier this week, the city reported 275 people were known to be living in 72 encampments across Winnipeg — down from 100 encampments housing about 700 people last September. The report also noted that 141 sites have been remediated since the city’s encampment policy came into effect in November.

QDoc patients in tight spot over billing dispute

Chris Kitching 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:41 PM CDT

Manitobans have been pulled into a dispute between QDoc — a Winnipeg-based virtual health-care platform — and the NDP government over fees billed to the province for patient care.

An Aug. 24 email from QDoc to its users prompted concern or calls for clarity from Manitobans who use the 24-7 platform to see a physician or nurse practitioner through encrypted video calls.

“When I first read it, like many others, I assumed they were going to be nixing the service altogether because that’s the way it was presented,” Tyndall resident Stephanie Pituley said.

“Upon further research, obviously that’s not the case, but I am still concerned to be honest. How many people did that research, I don’t know.”

Police in standoff in Westwood

1 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 4:43 PM CDT

Winnipeg police officers are in a standoff that began Thursday morning in Westwood.

Police were called to Byrd Avenue shortly before 9:30 a.m. after a man was seen walking with what appeared to be a firearm, said Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Claude Chancy.

Officers have identified a home connected to the investigation, he said. Police have taken one man into custody and seized several weapons, including a firearm, said Chancy. He was not sure if the man arrested was the individual spotted walking with the firearm.

A section of Byrd Avenue and Davis Crescent has been closed to traffic.
