Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 08/03/2016 (3865 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I was hungry last night and went out with my wife of one year for dinner. She hadn’t eaten her second piece of chicken yet, so I reached over and speared it with my fork. She said, “Not so fast, buddy. You didn’t ask permission!” I said angrily, “But aren’t we a married couple and what’s yours is mine and vice versa?” She said, “We’re not that married.” I saw red, and pulled out the big gun and said, “But don’t I pay for everything these days?” She looked at me in shock, and said in a cold voice, “Remind me never to have a baby with you.”
She has been out of work for a few months and I have paid for everything, but I didn’t mean to say I own her, which turns out to be her interpretation. Now she’s not talking to me and is looking for a new job long into the night with her jaw set and scary cold eyes. Help me, please!
— Big Mouth, River Heights
Dear Big Mouth: There are big fights and little fights in a marriage. This was a giant fight. She has probably been feeling bad about being unemployed, and then you told her you owned the food on her dinner plate. At least, in her sensitive state, that’s how she took it.
Serious help is needed here. It’s the type of situation where she might take a job, any job, and move out. The baby statement was chilling. Get emergency relationship counselling for yourself and ask her to go with you. You need to stop the growing silence, which could end this rocky new marriage.
