Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: With regards to the woman whose date seemed to be less interested in her as she was describing the duties of her possibly intimidating job, I am wondering which jobs would fit into the category of being intimidating?
— Curious Man, Winnipeg
Dear Curious Man: Intimidating jobs, for some guys with low confidence, could be careers in the police force or the army, or in show business where people get applause and attention. Or, it could be intimidating if she’s the head of a big business enterprise, a politician, maybe a woman who drives big equipment, a professional such as a doctor or a lawyer; basically anybody with a title or status or someone making a lot a lot of money — more than they do. You would be surprised what intimidates certain men with low confidence that would not phase men with higher confidence.
Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I was surprised at your answer to Embarrassed Newlywed. Her husband is the one who should be embarrassed. You did not address the fact that her husband left her outside in her bathrobe and chose not to answer her phone call. Granted, he may not have known the door blew closed, but she could have asked the neighbour to call him at the curling rink to explain the situation. What does she mean, how do I get him back? He is the one who seems insensitive here. Could she also just get a second remote?
— Missed the Point, Winnipeg
Dear Missed the Point: I see your confusion. “Get him back” meant “prank him,” not kiss up to him to get him back. (Of course you’re referring to the wife who fought with her husband over hogging the remote who ended up locked outside the house when she chased him to his truck as he was on his way to curl.)
Yes, she could have phoned the rink and made a fuss, but some people prefer to make their point with humour rather than anger. That’s why I suggested the shirt imprinted with Queen of the Remote on it, for her to wear to the rink to watch her husband curling. I still think it’s a good idea.
