Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My career is going straight down the drain. I was pushed into this area of science by my parents and now I'm sick and tired of it. I have always been an artsy type in a family of three generations of doctors and researchers, and it was assumed that the arts were utterly useless. What do you think I should do?

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My career is going straight down the drain. I was pushed into this area of science by my parents and now I’m sick and tired of it. I have always been an artsy type in a family of three generations of doctors and researchers, and it was assumed that the arts were utterly useless. What do you think I should do?

— Artsy Guy, South End

Dear Artsy Guy: It’s time to make the break. Say goodbye to the any family finances that fund your medical career, and get a server’s job where you can make tips, for a year. Save all your money and start funding yourself to take courses in graphic arts or fine arts, whatever, while holding a part-time job. You might even consider schooling in a different city. There’s nothing like the geographic cure to encourage independence and to impress upon your folks you will be the person you were born to be, not the latest in a string of the family’s line of doctors, dentists and researchers.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I stole a lot of food when I was younger, and was poor and hungry. I worked my way up and now I have money to spare. The problem is my wife always wants to give to charity more than I do. When she asks me why, I tell her I give at the office and other such nonsense. The truth is I’m afraid to be poor again, so I save and save. What should I tell her?

— Insecure Businessman, Winnipeg

Dear Insecure Businessman: Why can’t you tell her the truth? It is understandable when you explain it. Maybe she can be put in charge of donating to charity. You can take over more of the household expenses than she does because you feel more comfortable spending your part of the budget that way. It will all come out even in the end.
