Patrick Friesen’s new book of poetry, Sightings, feels like a return to familiar ground for Winnipeg readers who have followed his career from the beginning.

Though he has lived in Victoria, B.C., for many years, his creative roots run deep in Manitoba, where he first began shaping the voice that has carried him through 50 years of writing.

Our interview was conducted via email, but previous chats with the poet, at a time when The Shunning — the 1980 book that would become his breakthrough and would go on to become a play produced by Prairie Theatre Exchange and Manitoba Theatre Centre — was still a work in progress, took place in the third floor loft of his house just off River Avenue and Osborne Street.

The space was crowded with books, drafts and the quiet intensity of a writer at work. On the table beside him sat a half-filled bottle of whisky.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) — The rapper Offset, a former member of the influential hip-hop trio Migos, was shot outside a Florida casino and is in stable condition, a spokesperson said Tuesday.

Offset, who was once married to Cardi B, was being treated at a hospital after Monday night's shooting, the spokesperson said in a statement, although his exact condition was unknown. Police said the injuries were not life threatening.

More than three years ago, Offset’s cousin Takeoff, another member of Migos, was shot and killed at a Houston bowling alley.

The shooting followed a fight, police said. A rapper known as Lil Tjay, Tione Jayden Merritt, was arrested for the altercation that occurred before Monday's shooting, the Seminole Police Department in Florida said. He was charged with disorderly conduct and operating a vehicle without a valid license, but he was not charged in the shooting.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Once upon a time there were three little girls who starred as private detectives answering to a never-seen boss in a show that turned into a pop culture phenomenon called “Charlie's Angels.”

Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd reunited to mark the show's 50th anniversary at PaleyFest LA on Monday night. They were greeted with a standing ovation and whoops and cheers from an audience at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The hour-long crime adventure series debuted on Sept. 22, 1976, in a pre-Internet and streaming world when there were just three major television networks. It was a top-10 hit for ABC in its first two of five seasons, ending in 1981.

“I knew the show was different, special and unique,” Smith told the audience. “Three women chasing danger instead of getting rescued.”

Parents charged after toddler slips into wolf area and gets hurt at Hersheypark zoo

HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — The parents of a toddler who suffered a minor injury at a Pennsylvania theme park zoo after squeezing through a fence near a wolf enclosure and making contact with one of the animals have been charged with endangering the welfare of children, police said.

Evidence showed that the parents both walked about 25 to 30 feet (7.6 meters to 9.1 meters) away from the child to a seating area with benches and appeared to be paying attention to their cellphones when they noticed what was happening Saturday at ZooAmerica in the Hersheypark theme park, police said in a news release.

The child went through a small opening in a wooden barrier perimeter fence and entered a restricted area near the wolf exhibit, the Derry Township Police said. The child reached a primary metal fence enclosure and was hurt after placing a hand through that fencing.

“From the injuries sustained, it appears as though one of the wolves in the enclosure instinctively and naturally grabbed onto the child’s hand with its mouth. Several bystanders intervened and helped pull the child away,” police said in the release.

Judge Alan Schneider told the “Old Town Road” rapper and singer on Monday that if he sticks to his treatment program and obeys all laws for two years, his four felony counts will be dismissed.

The court found that the incident was the result of his since-diagnosed bipolar disorder and was an aberration from his usual behavior.

The program, formally known as postponement of prosecution probation, also requires that he not possess guns or threaten violence.

BRASILIA (AP) — Thousands of Indigenous people marched in Brazil’s capital on Tuesday to protest what they say are violations of their land rights by large corporations advancing farming, logging and mining projects.

Indigenous leaders also sought to apply pressure on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has supported Indigenous rights and environmental stewardship in Latin America's largest nation while also pushing oil and other projects that appear to go against those aims. The leftist leader is expected to run for reelection in October.

Protesters walked along the Esplanade of the Ministries toward Three Powers Square, home to the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court. The demonstration was part of the annual Free Land Encampment now in its 22nd edition.

Free Land is Brazil’s largest Indigenous mobilization, bringing together about 7,000 Indigenous people from 200 groups from across the country who camp in Brasilia for a week to press for unified demands. This year’s gathering comes amid rising reports of violent attacks against the Pataxo people in Bahia state amid a land dispute with farmers, as well as significant protests in the Amazon region in recent months.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Thousands of revelers flooded Nigeria's Lagos for the annual Lagos Fanti Carnival, celebrating the Afro-Brazilian heritage of the “Aguda” or the formerly enslaved people who returned from Brazil in the 19th century.

The festival, usually celebrated during Eastertide in recent years, is one of West Africa’s most prominent cultural celebrations, similar to Brazil’s Rio Carnival, the world's biggest party.

After reaching West Africa, many of the returnees settled in Lagos, building a life among the city’s Yoruba ethnic group. They retained some of the Brazilian and Portuguese cultures and infused them into music, food, architecture, religion and lifestyle, giving life to the Fanti carnival.

“If you know the history of Lagos, you will understand how this carnival is important to the city and its history," said Ademola Oduyebo, one of the carnival revelers, on Monday. “It is important that we preserve this so for our children.”
