Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I met a woman on a lonely night at an upscale hotel bar last week and we talked for two hours. I travel for business and am often in Winnipeg for two or three nights at a time. I really liked her and she seemed to like me. When I asked if she wanted to come up to my room, she laughed and said, “No, I have a girlfriend at home. But, she wouldn’t mind if I brought you over to play with us.”

Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!

I didn’t know what that meant. I asked, and she said, “Well, we have the same taste in men and she’s lots of fun.”

I kind of gulped and went red. I paid the bill and said “No thanks!”

I’m just a guy from Saskatchewan, originally from a farm. Did I just meet a pro? If so, why would she waste two hours talking to me? Was I dumb not to have gone? It would have been my first threesome.

— Should I Have Gone For It? Regina

Dear Should I: It’s curious she was at the bar by herself, given her home situation. And the invitation to go home with her for a threesome with a girl sets my spidey senses tingling. If you had gone with her, there might have been no other girl, and she might have asked for “rent money” or you might have found your wallet considerably lighter after you were in the taxi back to the hotel.

Talking to you for a couple of hours was part of softening you up, and also revealed to this woman how innocent you were and your financial situation. You may have seemed like a good bet as she wouldn’t be too worried you’d go to the police and reveal why you were at her house.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m sad because my boyfriend — the fancy chef — won’t cook for me. I offer my home cooking, which is pretty good, but usually he eats at work. He has fancy, expensive, healthy food any time he wants. He cooks it himself and customers rave about it. When he gets home he just wants a couple of beers and macaroni and cheese out of the box. But, he won’t even taste what I cooked for dinner earlier, because it’s beneath his standards.

Now, he wonders why I am not hungry for his kisses and his body when he finally presents himself on the couch or in bed after a night at work. I don’t know what to do. I used to love him, but I don’t feel it now. I have tried to talk with him, over and over, but he says he’s too tired from work and just wants to watch TV and chill out in peace. I’m 25; we’re not legally married and we have been together three years. He owns the place here, but I pay half the mortgage. What should I do?

— Chef’s Leftovers, St. Boniface

Dear Leftovers: It seems Mr. All About Me isn’t interested in much more than the rent cheque, and maybe some sexual services. This relationship is way past its “best before” date. There is nothing left to do but say goodbye, cry and pack.

Are you so afraid of loneliness you can’t make the move to dump this cold guy? A fun place with roommates might be a positive change. Check college and university housing billboards, as this is the month people are looking for new roomies. In the meantime, Mr. Chef can pay his own mortgage.

Signs of local neo-Nazi recruiting efforts spark concern

A far-right canvassing push in Manitoba this month is raising concerns among Winnipeg residents.

Stickers promoting Nationalist-13, a men’s-only neo-Nazi group also known as NS-13 based primarily in Hamilton, Ont., have appeared in Winnipeg and parts of southern Manitoba. The stickers bear national socialist branding and messages such as “White Man, Fight Back” and “White Community, Political Action, Training and Fitness.”

Winnipeg writer Jess Woolford recently encountered an NS-13 poster on Pembina Highway.

“It was appalling,” Woolford said. “It has the Nazi death heads covering people’s faces. It was pretty disturbing to come across this … I just didn’t expect to see it so blatantly displayed in my neighbourhood.”

Important lessons lostRe: Parents still in charge amid health curriculum overhaul: premier, Sept. 23

The premier’s assurance that parents could continue to “opt-out” their children from health education classes on the premise that specific topics clash with their “personal beliefs” is, at once, disappointing and concerning.

To be blunt, such an approach is Trumpian. It condones “othering.”

The new curriculum content is intended to provide students with factual information that will help keep them safe from myriad physical, emotional and mental harms while also providing opportunities to develop understanding, respect and compassion for their fellow humans.

Restaurants ‘under pressure’

Happy hour outings are on Jackie Piggott’s calendar — but even those are fewer.

She and her husband might visit a restaurant once a month. It’s a change over the past year: earlier, they may go twice, thrice or weekly.

“It’s something that we’ve talked about, my husband and myself, just because the pricing is so expensive,” Piggott said, stopping during a grocery run in St. Vital. “It’s also better for our health.”

She’s in the majority: a new Restaurants Canada report found 80 per cent of Canadians are eating out less frequently because of higher living costs, up from 75 per cent in 2025.
