Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places all winter long. I was lonely and trying to find love online, because what choice did we all have this year with the virus? I’d seem do fine, thinking I’d found a beautiful woman, and then everything would fizzle once we got talking on the phone.

Hey there, time traveller!

My big interest is world politics, and that brings out all kinds of emotions and prejudices. I am well-educated, work at a university and am not white. So, that’s an added layer of complication.

Here’s how it usually goes: I’m attracted to young women’s beautiful photos, but often, once we actually talk, they turn out to be boring, brainless or giggly — or looking for phone sex with a guy who looks like me. (I have a strong build from weightlifting.)

I like sex as much as anybody, but I need to desire the person first, and most times I’m turned off by the speed they want to get at me. It’s not even safe in this COVID-19 climate.

So, what hope is there for me if I don’t participate online where everyone who’s single (or cheating) operates now?

— Looking for Real Love, Wolseley

Dear Looking for Love: You need to go at it from a whole different angle. Try to get into an activist group for something you want to see change. Get really involved and see if you can make friends, and perhaps you’ll find someone there who’s attractive, both intellectually and physically.

It won’t be too many more months before people will be protected by COVID-19 vaccines and can meet without the fear of catching the virus. So, stop looking for love on the dating apps, particularly those that depend heavily on photos to decide who gets chosen for attention. Stop doing more of what doesn’t work.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m a guy who often gets mistaken as a racist or a sexist, because I dress like a blue-collar guy. My girlfriend tells me not to let it bother me, but it really does. Online, and in the real world, people assume I’m some idiot who hates other races and women, but I don’t.

I’m a big, loving guy with a long beard and pony tail, an earring and tattoos, and I work with my hands when I’m not busy running my crew with the business. I wear a black leather jacket a fair bit. I guess I look a little tough.

I’m not someone who wants to hurt other people. I must admit my internal voice has really changed over the years from positive, to a cynical voice that assumes the worst of people in the white-collar world — as “the worst” is how I have been treated by many of them.

Should I just give up and buy some “dad pants” and a conservative dress shirt? Ha! I don’t think so, but I do want to feel like I have a place in this world, without having to wear a uniform. What do you think?

— Just a Normal Guy, South Osborne

Dear Normal Guy: Be exactly how you are, and wear whatever you want to wear in daily life. Once in a while, just for some fun, go to a wedding or charity fundraiser, and out-dress the white-collar types in a tuxedo, and a medium-sized diamond earring and let people see another side of you. The ladies will find your look charming with the beard and hair — kind of like seeing a rock star at a music awards show. Nothing wrong with that!

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I don’t know how I do it, but I constantly date men who put on a great show for the first six months, then just revert into children. Not only that, I have a knack for finding men who want to “invest” money for me. As I get older, I learn more and more that guys are terrible at being adults.

My body is the real traitor. I just can’t get over how hot I get when a bad boy talks to me. Am I doomed to repeat this pattern forever? It feels that way.

— The Repeater, North Kildonan

Dear Repeater: These guys are man candy. You can have a few, but you’ll make yourself sick if you have too many. Candy should never be your whole diet.

After a few dates with this type, you need to have a more serious talk where you conduct a hidden interview to find out the guy’s views on money and investing (gambling?), and how well he’s getting along in the work department. Whatever you do, don’t whine about all the men you’ve already given money to. If you need to get rid of one of these “forever boys,” try to borrow money from him, and watch him run!

A number of people were inside and outside the home when police arrived. The victim was pronounced dead after paramedics arrived.

Police said the suspect, Justin Linklater, was arrested at the scene and charged. He was remanded in custody prior to a court appearance.

Senior’s family frustrated by Manitoba Housing’s response to apartment’s bedbug infestation

Malak Abas 5 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

The family of a senior who left his Manitoba Housing apartment after two years of bedbug infestations is accusing the provincial body of being ineffectual and irresponsible in its treatment of the persistent pests.

The senior had lived at the Columbus Courts building at 253 Edgeland Blvd., since 2011, but when he began getting severe skin rashes all over his body about two years ago, his son began to worry.

They found out the 14-storey building was being sprayed for bedbugs after an infestation had impacted several units. After multiple rounds of pesticide treatments, the problem has not subsided, the son told the Free Press.

“They come in, they spray pesticides and then they leave. And it’s been completely ineffectual,” he said. “My dad keeps seeing the bedbugs even the day after the treatments and continuously, they’ve just gotten worse and worse.”

Inflation-battered U.S. voters could prove to be key Canadian ally in fight against Trump’s trade tyranny

Dan Lett 5 minute read Yesterday at 1:37 PM CDT

Is there anything or anyone that can help Canada and the United States avoid an unprecedented trade war?

Both nations stand poised on the precipice of a tariff battle that could — in the worst-case scenario — trigger an economic downturn. Both countries have a lot to lose, but neither country is showing any sign of backing down.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has, by all accounts, given negotiation a full chance to defuse the trade war. It didn’t work and it appears now that nothing — neither thoughtful negotiation or retaliatory measures — will dissuade U.S. President Donald Trump from his war of trade attrition.

Increasingly, it appears that if Trump is going to back away from punitive tariffs against Canada, it will be because of mounting pressure from within the United States and not because of tough talk and countermeasures from this side of the border.

Tough to stomach date’s lack of compassion

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I had dinner with my new guy at a fancy restaurant — his treat — and ate something that didn’t agree with me. I ended up in the restaurant bathroom, throwing the expensive dinner up. My date was actually vulgar about it — not sympathetic or taking things with a sense of humour at all.

He was so disgusted he called a taxi to take me home so I wouldn’t end up throwing up in his precious car. I cancelled the taxi and called my family, and my father and brother came right away. They wanted to ring his neck!

I’d never have reacted so cruelly if my date had gotten sick at a restaurant.

This guy has since called to see if I’m “back to normal.” He casually asked if I wanted to give it another try. I just didn’t have the desire to talk with him anymore, so I hung up. Is this my problem? Am I “over-reacting” as he has told other people I know?

Another downtown eatery bites the dust

Another longtime downtown Winnipeg restaurant has closed its doors, leaving another hole in the city’s core.

Rudy’s Eat & Drink announced on social media it was closing after 15 years in Manitoba Hydro Place but did not cite a reason.

“Cheers to the years of local beer, burger weeks, jets games, weddings, catering, stone soup week, DJ nights, charitable events and everything in between — we will hold these memories forever,” the post said. “The end of an era — but there’s always another chapter.”

General manager Mackenzie Robb declined to comment on the eatery’s closure. Rudy’s last day of service was on Friday.

Woman dies in River Heights house fire

Morgan Modjeski 3 minute read Yesterday at 8:21 PM CDT

A woman is dead after a fire destroyed part of a house in Winnipeg’s River Heights community.

Neighbour Russ Kolisnyk said he watched as fire crews battled the blaze at about 10:30 a.m. at 1076 Fleet Ave. Monday.

“They went into the back of the house with hoses, all of the other equipment, they were in their full gear,” the 61-year-old said. “Then we heard a person coming out and they came out the front door with her.”

A couple, believed to be in their 60s, lived in the home, another neighbour said.
