Not your role to referee parents’ marital melee

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My parents have been fighting, and now we’re living in a house of silence. All I can hear is footsteps, the odd question and their one-word answers. I don’t know exactly what Mom did, but apparently it is ”beyond forgiving” and “against our marriage vows.”

Hey there, time traveller!

Last night I ate dinner in total silence with them. At the end I said to them both: “I’m not living here like this, anymore. I’ll be at Grandma’s house (which is right next door) until you make up and start acting like a loving couple again.” Then my mother burst out: “Tell your father to get rid of the other woman he’s seeing!”

I looked back and forth a couple of times at my folks and then said, “That can’t be true! Is it, Dad?” He said nothing. Tears welled up in his eyes, and that was it. Now what can I do?

— Moving Next Door, North Kildonan

Dear Moving: It’s a good thing you didn’t take it upon yourself to play referee! You’re smart to go live with Grandma for a time, and let your parents sort this out. If you aren’t staying at home, your parents will have more opportunities to have open conversations, and say what they need to say.

Hopefully they’ll also get some counselling. In fact, you should request they do so. That’s right: put the pressure on them before you go next door to stay for a while. Then make little visits to see the folks, together and apart, while they work on this mess. Grandma may also be able to offer some insight into your parents’ predicament. (She may even know the identity of the other woman.)

Whatever you do, don’t give up your peace of mind by trying to stick it out in the family home while your folks fight about this affair. It’s not good for your mind, nor your young heart, to be present through this kind of conflict.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’ve always loved Halloween and have regularly created my way-out costumes in advance. Last year for instance, I made a big, red ladybug getup with a light-up skirt and crazy green hair with tentacles!

Imagine my disappointment when I found out my new boyfriend hates Halloween and will have nothing to do with it, except to stay home and watch scary movies. Big wuss!

He said teens used to chase younger kids in his neighbourhood and beat them up to steal their treat bags. I can’t blame him for being scared then, but the man is 24 years old now, and a football player.

I don’t want to be stuck at home with a big baby when there are some great parties going on in the city.

Now he’s very upset with me, because I intend to go to a huge party offering big prizes in a great costume I designed recently. Another guy I know — just a friend — has agree to go with me to be half of a costumed duo of Frankenstein and his bride. So my boyfriend’s nose is out of joint!

Otherwise, I really care about him. What can I do to get him past his hangup so he can start having fun on these big nights?

— Halloween Fan Forever, St. Norbert

Dear Halloween Fan: You didn’t cause your boyfriend’s Halloween hangup and you shouldn’t have to pay for it.

Analyze what you truly like about the guy, and ask yourself if you can maybe find these qualities somewhere else. Then keep your eyes open at the costume party you’re attending. You may find another guy who is as creative and as fun-loving as you are!

Lively people like you need some bounce in their relationships and don’t tend to be patient with people who are not similarly enthusiastic.

AC/DC fans power up with pre-show pop-up

By Sheldon Birnie 3 minute read Friday, Sep. 18, 2026

Those getting ready to rock on Sunday night at Princess Auto Stadium, can prime their engines at AC/DC’s PWR/UP Pop-Up this weekend.

Fans lined up all the way down Fort Street south of the Pyramid Cabaret for a special preview event on Friday night.

“We’re so excited,” said Marcella Ceron shortly after getting into the Pyramid. Ceron and her husband were hoping to win tickets to Sunday’s concert, one of a number of promotions running throughout the pop-up’s tenure at the downtown bar. “We were in line since 5 o’clock.”

According to organizers, the venues across Canada have been handpicked – including the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver and Foufounes Électriques in Montreal, among others — owing to their reputations as “places where fans already gather and music culture lives.”

Elmwood–East Kildonan candidate promises to tackle ‘inefficiency’ in government

Gabrielle Piché 2 minute read Yesterday at 6:17 PM CDT

The former assistant of late Elmwood–East Kildonan councillor Jason Schreyer is again running for the seat.

Chris Sweryda officially launched his campaign Saturday. He did so with the backdrop of a grocery program he runs, where food is sold near-cost out of St. Gerard School’s gym.

Rows of cereal, pasta sauce and chips filled tables ahead of the program’s afternoon opening. Sweryda created the pop-up with Schreyer months ahead of the former councillor’s April 2025 death.

The program sees roughly 500 people each day it’s open (which is every other week on Saturday), Sweryda said.

Cabernet Sauvignon star of wine festival

Ben Sigurdson 5 minute read Yesterday at 3:00 AM CDT

The Winnipeg Wine Festival will celebrate the king of red wine grapes next weekend — the theme of this year’s festival, which takes place Sept. 25 and 26 at the RBC Convention Centre, is Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cab Sauv, as it’s also known, is the world’s most widely planted wine grape of any colour, first coming to prominence in the 1800s in France’s Bordeaux region, where the grape is still popular. Rather than single-variety wines, Bordeaux reds tend to be blends, with those coming from the left bank of the Gironde estuary being Cabernet-dominant, while right-bank wines are Merlot-dominant, with Cabernet Sauvignon playing a supporting role. Cabernet and Merlot work well together and many other countries have followed suit in blending the two.

A team at University of California Davis put Cabernet Sauvignon through a DNA test in 1996 and discovered its parent grapes are Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc — it’s likely that at some point the two varieties, planted next to each other in some vineyard, crossed and mutated and became the grape we know today. (Someone growing grapes in the 19th century must have had an inkling of what was up, as the grape has been called Cabernet Sauvignon since long before the DNA test.)

Flavour-wise, most Cabernet Sauvignon wines are big and bold, with a core of deep dark berry flavours, some graphite and spice notes and relatively bright acidity. It’s a grape that is well-suited to barrel aging, with most examples seeing at least some time in wood.

‘She was looking to destroy me’: convicted harasser faces new charges

Dean Pritchard 5 minute read Thursday, Sep. 17, 2026

When Agnieszka Ciochon-Newton moved into the 55-plus apartment building on Stradbrook Avenue last year, she came across as “timid, soft-spoken and sensitive,” said building manager Tanya Owen.

Little did Owen know the meek-looking 58-year-old woman would soon turn her life and the lives of many of her tenants upside down and threaten her career and family.

“She was looking to destroy me for a simple tenant disagreement,” Owen said Thursday.

Court records show Ciochon-Newton was arrested earlier this month and charged with seven counts of criminal harassment, two counts of uttering threats and one count each of fraud, breaking and entering, attempting to obstruct justice, intimidation of a justice official, mischief and defamatory libel.
