DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I met my new girlfriend last month at a great conference in Winnipeg. We all had too many drinks at the hotel, and she went to bed with me on the first night. Then, because she’s a “good girl,” she tried to backtrack on that, and put a silly limit on our sex play for the first month. But her sexuality — when she eventually warmed up again to it — was blazingly hot!

In the next month we had hot weekends together, a dozen dinners and many evening drives for ice cream. She also started sharing photos of us together with all her friends online and the congratulations to us as a new couple started to come in.

Two months into the relationship, she’d assumed we were together forever and shared that impression. “Not for me. Too early!” I said. Then she blew up. Now she repeats our “breakup conversation,” to everybody who’ll listen, and doesn’t speak to me anymore.

— Dumb Guy? The Maples

Dear Guy: You still care, and so does she, so listen up. You can’t keep calling halts to this freight train, if you want her for good. You have to accept this is her emotional style. If you don’t like it, then say a final goodbye now, as the collisions over misunderstandings will only get bigger.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m driving home tomorrow from my beloved snowbird haven in beautiful Mexico. I do not want to come home, after spending fall to spring in heaven down here. I’ve been Livin’ La Vida Loca, as the song goes. I know now I was born to be laughing in the sunshine, playing sports or going on romantic side-trips down here.

I was in heaven all season and met many new, wonderful friends. Sadly, with prices climbing, I can no longer afford the life I lead in Mexico, and here’s the craziest part: I’m a former workaholic, but l’ve recently discovered how to really relax. I’m not an obsessive worker-type anymore. So what can I do to get back to the place I love and afford to stay there?

— Broken-Hearted Snowbird, Manitoba

Dear Broken-Hearted Snowbird: The biggest mistake in thinking is that you either have to buy the whole pie or none at all! While you can no longer afford as long a period of not bringing in income, it’s going to be snowy and icy-cold again next fall in Canada.

Consider earning travel money with seasonal jobs here at home, from June to late September to support your great Mexico holidays, maybe from a bit later in autumn to a tad earlier in the spring. It could prove to be a great pattern for you, and you’d get the best weather of both countries, continually.

Don’t let pyjama jibes sour your bedtime bond

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I got married in August and my new husband just bought himself old-man striped flannel pyjamas to wear to bed now that it’s getting colder out. He didn’t do this before we were married. What a turn-off. Should I buy him a nightcap as well?

He used to be a sexy guy who just dumped his clothes on the chair beside the bed and jumped in naked.

But last night I watched him come out of the bathroom in a ratty old robe. I thought, “He looks like my grandfather, not my husband.”

I called out sarcastically, “Hey, gramps, are you lost?” and he said, “Not anymore.” Then he walked into the spare bedroom and slept there all night without me. Help.

A trio of candidates will compete to become the first new city councillor in River Heights-Fort Garry since 2009.

Coun. John Orlikow, who won the seat in a byelection, is not running for another term.

Georgina Sabesky, who served as Orlikow’s executive assistant for 17 years, is now one of the candidates vying for the council seat.

Sabesky said that job gave her ample knowledge of the ward.

BRANDON — The Manitoba government will fund a new RCMP position dedicated to investigating livestock theft.

The announcement is expected to be made today at the annual lunch for the Manitoba Beef Producers at the legislature.

Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn said the investigative role will fill a pressing need.

“Personally speaking, I think this has been a long time waiting for this to come to reality,” the Dauphin MLA said Wednesday. “We are doing a great thing for the industry.”

Amazon in the weeds over damage to tall grass reserve

Eva Wasney 6 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026

Patricia Dutchak was devastated when she first saw the wide swaths of crushed grass and upturned soil at Winnipeg’s Rotary Prairie Nature Park, a municipal heritage site.

“This is a very rare ecosystem, a remnant of tall grass prairie, there’s barely any left in the world, and to come here and see all this damage was heartbreaking,” Dutchak, chair of the Transcona Rotary Club’s parks committee, says.

The club is responsible for maintaining the protected green space, which was significantly damaged this summer when a fence between the park and the neighbouring Amazon distribution centre was relocated.

The 20-acre nature preserve is situated on a narrow tract of land on Regent Avenue West in the commercial heart of Transcona. The park received its municipal heritage designation in 1992 and is, today, surrounded by high-traffic streets, industrial warehouses and car dealerships.
