Nine years for man who kidnapped delivery driver

A delivery driver was kidnapped after the break-up of a business partnership involving “grey-market vapes” that were sold at Winnipeg convenience stores, a Manitoba judge has been told.

The Winnipeg Police Service said last week that investigators recently arrested a third suspect in the Oct. 11, 2024 incident, in which three men are accused of kidnapping the 22-year-old driver and holding him at gunpoint for hours as they stole merchandise from a storage facility.

One of the men arrested, 43-year-old Jonathon Ranger, pleaded guilty earlier this year to forcible confinement and two offences related to the stolen gun that was found when he was arrested in December 2024.

In June, he was sentenced to nine years in prison, minus time served, based on a joint recommendation from the Crown and defence as part of a plea bargain.

Though there are provincial standards in place, there is little consistency among them. More than a few are evasive, unwilling to communicate about issues of importance to residents and their families.

Man armed with ‘edged weapon’ dies after dispute in Linden Woods home

The family of a 42-year-old Winnipeg man shot and killed by police in Linden Woods on Monday night says the incident raises troubling questions about how officers respond to people in mental-health crisis.

“Their reaction to mental health is my concern,” said the man’s sister-in-law, Erica Smith, who spoke outside her brother-in-law’s Avon Gate home on Tuesday. She said her brother-in-law struggled with his mental health.

“It didn’t have to end like this,” she said, fighting back tears. “It could have ended differently.”

Police said officers encountered the man armed with an “edged weapon” at the home when they arrived shortly before 10:30 p.m.

WestJet cabin crews issue warning

Travellers leaving Winnipeg got an unexpected view Tuesday — a line of silent WestJet flight attendants, wearing sunglasses and holding signs protesting unfair wages.

“Ready to Strike” and “Unpaid Work Won’t Fly!” boards faced passersby hurrying into the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport’s departures level.

Some 66 Manitoba-based WestJet workers stood silently outside the terminal for a half-hour, before noon.

Elsewhere, their colleagues cast strike votes. Some 4,400 flight attendants across Canada began voting July 9; the vote closes Wednesday.

The Goldeyes organization has long been friends of local brewers — in 2022 the club introduced the Craft Beer Corner with a rotating selection of local beers on tap for thirsty baseball fans. Later that year, Goldeyes general manager Andrew Collier pitched the idea of a craft beer festival at the ballpark to brewers and was met with widespread enthusiasm — and Ballpark Brewfest was born.

The inaugural Ballpark Brewfest in 2022 featured around 18 craft brewers taking part; the following year two dozen brewers were pouring lagers, ales, sours and all manner ofIPAs.

Saturday’s Ballpark Brewfest marks its return after a two-year absence, and will see over 20 breweries taking part in the afternoon tasting (which takes place rain or shine — breweries are set up under the roof of the concourse). Participating breweries include Barn Hammer, Dastardly Villain, Trans Canada, Devil May Care and Good Neighbour — in addition to core pours, many breweries will be bringing small-batch/exclusive brews.
