DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My boyfriend wants something special for Christmas — a scene he fantasizes about from Batman movies I’ve watched with him.

Yes, I could probably try to play the part of Batman’s babe, but I fear it’ll make me break out laughing when I see him in that old Batman costume from the basement. He used to wear it to Halloween parties when he was fit and sexy. He’s gotten pretty chubby and it’s not going to close in the back. It won’t be flattering. Help!

— Love My Batman Dearly, North End

Dear Love My Batman: Be a sport! Catwoman was Batman’s greatest love, so why not get her costume together for yourself, along with a sexy mask to wear?

You won’t giggle if you’re also wearing a costume and the room is almost in darkness. Then you can give the man you love dearly a gift he desires and certainly remember. You may even want to do re-runs, if it goes well!

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My wife is terrible at driving her car. She’s a hesitant, jerky driver, always stabbing at the brake pedal. The other day she jumped so hard on it, my head hit the visor, and I yelled. I told her I was finished with riding in her car, unless I was the driver.

She started to cry, saying she knows she’s “a horrible driver” and was sorry she hurt my head. Then she put her own head down on the wheel and blubbered. Crying always undoes me. I don’t know what to do. Please help us.

— Mean Guy and the Cryer, Charleswood

Dear Meanie: There’s an easy fix for this. Buy your wife a romantic gift for Christmas — and on Boxing Day, also gift her with expert driving lessons from a reputable driving business. She may end up being a better driver than you are.

Lots of people didn’t get much help when they were learning. Even those who did may have forgotten a lot of rules, tips and techniques, and they may have developed a heavy foot.

Just don’t make the mistake of thinking you can teach your lady to drive better yourself and save the money on lessons. That ship has sailed on an ocean of tears.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: This is in regard to the lady who got shamed for bringing baking she bought from a “home baker” to a ladies’ Christmas baking exchange group.

Buying from a store would be a mistake, but buying from a homemade source — what’s wrong with that? She revealed it (to one person, who spread the news) and didn’t try to hide it, really. Worthy of a laugh, but not condemnation!

If this is a women’s group looking for camaraderie, they have a long way to go. They need to get over themselves! She’s better off without these judgmental women. I’m a baker and love desserts, wherever they come from.

— Lighten Up, Winnipeg

Dear Lighten Up: The only good thing about the shaming from this bunch was getting turfed out of the group. She also got her “purchased baking” back to serve some to real friends this Christmas.

The United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg is mourning the loss of Winnipeg firefighter Darrel Maynard while continuing its work to raise awareness of occupational cancer and improve health protections for firefighters.

Maynard, a senior firefighter II and acting lieutenant with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, died Aug. 5 at age 41 after a three-year battle with occupational cancer.

He served Winnipeg for nearly two decades and leaves behind his wife Francine and sons Colin and Christian.

“Darrel was an incredible, incredible person, an incredible firefighter, and really, really special to all of us,” said Nick Kasper, president of UFFW.

Bombers manage to hand Redblacks another loss

Taylor Allen 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:35 AM CDT

It looked bad. Real bad.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros made his return to the lineup on Friday night against the Ottawa Redblacks, and he was once again the victim of a blindside hit.

The one he suffered in Hamilton on July 5 appeared relatively modest in comparison and yet, it sidelined him for a month with a neck injury.

So when Redblacks linebacker Lucas Cormier came around the edge unblocked and hammered Collaros from behind in the second quarter, you could hear a pin drop inside Princess Auto Stadium.

Hometown hero hits CEBL championship clinching shot

Taylor Allen 4 minute read 6:34 PM CDT

Chapter 1 of Winnipeg Sea Bears basketball was capped by hometown hero Chad Posthumus.

It was May 27, 2023, and the late, great centre out of River East Collegiate had a put-back basket off a Teddy Allen miss to give the Sea Bears a 90-85 victory over the Vancouver Bandits in Winnipeg’s inaugural game, in front of what was then a record crowd of 7,303.

So, on Saturday, it was rather poetic that Simon Hildebrandt — another Winnipegger and a player Posthumus used to mentor — was the one to put an exclamation mark on the franchise’s latest and greatest chapter.

Hildebrandt drilled a wide-open three in Target Score Time to crown the Sea Bears as the 2026 CEBL champions.

Proposed Transcona development — which could add 20,000 people — gets thumbs down from residents

Joyanne Pursaga 4 minute read Friday, Aug. 14, 2026

Dozens of Winnipeggers fear plans to make way for up to 20,000 more people to live in south Transcona would dramatically alter their neighbourhood and tie hefty fees for new services to their property titles.

If city council adopts the proposed South Transcona secondary plan, all future development applications would need to conform to its goals. The affected area is located south of Dugald Road, north of St. Boniface Road, east of Plessis Road and west of Murdock Road.

Homeowner Virginia Page Jähne fears the plan could add a massive tab to the title of her 4.3-acre property to cover services required for the development.

“My main concern is that they are wanting to put $1.4 million onto my title to pay for this. Now, they say that I will not have to pay it unless I subdivide. But if a person comes by and wants to buy from me … and they see that $1.4 million … what’s the first thing (they’re) going to do?” said Page Jähne, in an interview.

Murphy helps Goldeyes battle back to beat Explorers

Mike McIntyre 5 minute read 5:55 PM CDT

Max Murphy didn’t hesitate when asked to describe his season so far.

“It’s been terrible,” the veteran Winnipeg Goldeyes outfielder told the Free Press.

Murphy is admittedly critical of himself, the product of a high standard he’s set during a pro baseball career that began in 2014 and has included the past six years with the Fish, where he’s established new franchise records for home runs and RBIs.

So you can imagine the relief felt on Sunday when he looked a lot more like the Murphy of old in leading his team to a 6-2 comeback victory over the Sioux City Explorers to close out a six-game homestand at Blue Cross Park in front of a season-high crowd of 6,825.
