Ex-girlfriend wants his new body

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I did too much eating and drank too much beer when I was with my ex-girlfriend and ended up with a big spare tire around the middle. She dumped me for it, saying I looked like an old man at 25, with my fat gut and red face. In our final shouting match, she said, “You have the ugliest body I’ve ever seen!” Then I saw red.

The next day I went to a private trainer and have been going to a gym over the last few months. Today, six months later, she joined my gym. I hate to brag, but this boy is ripped. When she got on a machine that looked my way, she recognized me and ran over and gave me a hug, as if nothing had ever happened. I said coldly, “Get your hands off my body,” and gestured for her to leave. Now, how do I endure this gym with her as a member?

Dear Ripped: You can bet she knew you would be there. Hold the line so she avoids you instead of you having to avoid her and change your schedule. Hopefully, she finagled a free pass to check you out, and won’t be back.

Furby Street residents fed up with inaction on drug houses

Carol Sanders 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:39 AM CDT

Anxious Furby Street residents contacted the city and their elected officials Friday to — once again — report people coming and going from a boarded-up house they call a dangerous “drug centre” and “den of thieves” that’s just steps away from a house under construction.

Linda Zak, who was holding a yard sale with a group of neighbours Friday morning, described the trouble the home attracts, while a woman slumped on the front steps and a man standing in the yard yelled to someone inside it.

“It is a drug centre,” said Zak, 77. “We know that. A couple of days ago, a person lit the front on fire. Now, as you look at it, you can see where the facade was burning and they were trying to harm people inside.”

“We’re very concerned about it being next to the home this man is building,” she said, pointing to the two-storey that’s nearly completed. The boarded-up house is in the 500 block of Furby.

In a smart-device world, some families keep phone jacked into the wall

When the phone rings in Kristin Shiach and Jordan Sobkowicz’s Riverview home, their three daughters race to see who can be the first to answer.

“It depends who is closest,” says 13-year-old Emily. “If I’m sitting in my room, I can get to it quickest.”

“That’s because it’s always in your room,” Anna, 10, replies. “You never put it back!”

“Usually, when the phone rings,” explains Sobkowicz, “someone yells really loudly —”

Klein vows to freeze water, sewer rate for next two years

Joyanne Pursaga 4 minute read 6:09 PM CDT

Mayoral candidate Kevin Klein is promising to cancel a water and sewer rate hike proposed for next year and freeze the fee for two years.

Klein said Winnipeggers are simply paying far too much for the utility.

“I think we have to freeze them right now because we’ve seen (a substantial increase) in the last four years. We are facing some of the most difficult financial times for families right now,” he said.

He would also ask the provincial Public Utilities Board to set Winnipeg’s future water and sewer rates, a power currently held by city council.

Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan survived a confidence vote last week.

Caucus communications director Alison Sutherland confirmed the vote was held Friday and that Khan still has “the full confidence” of the PC caucus.

She did not provide further details.

The party under Khan’s leadership is floundering, a recent poll suggests.

Manitoba PCs choose Narth as interim leader; ‘deeply hurt’ Khan blasts former caucus colleagues

Carol Sanders 7 minute read Updated: 7:31 PM CDT

Manitoba’s Progressive Conservative caucus chose MLA Konrad Narth as interim party leader Tuesday to replace Obby Khan, who quit a day earlier after he said he was stabbed in the back by a small group of caucus members plotting in secret to oust him.

“I am deeply, emotionally hurt by this,” Khan told the Free Press Tuesday afternoon.

He announced late Monday afternoon that he was leaving the Tory caucus and will sit as an independent MLA. He was absent from the first question period in four months Tuesday as the legislature resumed sitting after the summer.

The former Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive lineman said he prevailed in a confidence vote Friday; 13 caucus members voted for him to remain leader, six voted against and one person was absent.
