DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I really like this gorgeous guy and we had our first date at a fancy place at The Forks. I was nervous and drank and ate too much. Then, I threw up and ran for the ladies room. He waited outside for a bit and then came in after me. He found me in a stall on the floor and helped me up.

He paid the bill and drove me to my parents because he said he couldn’t leave me alone in my apartment. I didn’t want him to see me further humiliate myself, anyway.

He hasn’t phoned or texted me since. Do you think he’ll ever phone again? I have tried to get in touch with him, but he’s not answering. Should I give up on him? I’m so sorry for being such an idiot. I know I drink too much, especially when I’m nervous. I also threw up a very expensive dinner and dessert. Please help.

— Young & Stupid Idiot, Winnipeg

Dear Young: Honey, you blew this one, so don’t hold your breath waiting for him to call you. This experience does not make you a stupid idiot, especially if you look at this as a sign you need to get help for your addiction. Drinking too much is a bad sign at any age. You need to call the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba for an assessment and find out what help they can give you. You also need to see a counsellor about your self-esteem and anxiety around new people.

Yes, this date was an ugly scene, but it was also a big wake-up call. As for the guy, he apparently doesn’t want to take your calls, so just let it go. Once you get yourself into a strong and healthier state of mind, maybe you’ll run into him again and be able to thank him for taking care of you that night.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My younger sister (an immature 12-year-old) hid under my bed when I was on the phone to my best friend and heard everything we were talking about, including fooling around with guys and sex. Then, she went and blabbed to my mom who threw a fit and spoke to my dad. As a result, I’m grounded for a month and have been warned not to beat up my sister or it will be two months.

I told my sister I will get her back in exactly the same way, so she should watch herself. She says she doesn’t care because she isn’t into boys, anyway. How can I get her back in a way she’ll really feel it? She’s still my sister but I’m going to get her.

— Want My Revenge, St. Vital

Dear Revenge: You are already getting your revenge. She is waiting for the axe to fall, while you do nothing. She will be imagining you trying to listen to her phone messages and hacking into her computer. Go about your merry way and let her imagination do the rest.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: On the way to work, I ran into an old boyfriend, almost literally. I hit his bumper. He jumped out to yell at me, saw who it was, and gave me a hug and a kiss. We had been wild and passionate lovers, but we broke up a few years ago. “Remind me why we broke up?” he asked, but I was too dazed and confused to answer.

While we were exchanging information, he asked me to go out with him again someday, and I said yes. He never called to complete the arrangements and I don’t see why I should call him when he made the first move. Should I call?

— Itching to See Him, St. James

Dear Itching: By all means, call him. If this were a business lunch, you’d call him immediately. The same goes for romance. Never waste time wondering if you should pick up the phone. Let us know what he has to say for himself and we can talk that over in a future column. Until you call, it will remain a mystery and that’s a waste of time and emotion.

Mike O’Shea summed it up best.

“That one doesn’t feel very good.”

Nor should it.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers started out hot Friday night, only to run out of gas down the stretch and allow the visiting Toronto Argonauts to steal a 30-28 victory.

Flammable gas culprit of 2024 Transcona home explosion: police

Malak Abas 1 minute read Friday, Sep. 25, 2026

Flammable gas is believed to be the cause of a 2024 house explosion in Transcona that damaged neighbouring homes and displaced residents.

“As a result of the investigation and upon Crown review, the explosion is believed to be an isolated incident,” Winnipeg Police Service Const. Dani McKinnon said in an email Friday afternoon.

“There are no public safety concerns connected to this incident, and no criminal charges have been laid.”

The sudden blast happened in a bungalow on Camrose Bay on June 26, 2024. It levelled the home and caused significant damage to 22 other houses. At the time, it was described as “catastrophic” by the fire chief at the scene.

Gordon Bell students relish — ‘of all things’ — new pickleball courts

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

Manitoba’s newest public school sports facility is bringing the pickleball craze to an inner-city campus.

Gordon Bell High School unveiled four custom-made courts for the popular paddle sport this fall as part of a multi-faceted makeover.

Grade 12 student Matea Thiessen Unger called the courts “the cherry on top,” of a multi-year construction project that consumed much of her high school career.

“It was happening for so long — it felt like it was never going to end,” the 16-year-old said.

‘In Normandy, we remember’

Travelling nearly 7,000 km from his home in France to Winnipeg gave Gabriel Zaranski a new perspective on warfare.

“It’s very different to speak about war in school (than) to speak with real people who (have fought) in a war,” he said. “We can feel the emotion when they speak … The testimony has more impact when it’s real soldiers.”

Zaranski is one of 14 Grade 12 students from Bayeux, a town in France’s Normandy region, in Winnipeg this week for a learning tour.

The students, who attend Lycée Arcisse de Caumont high school, met on Saturday with veterans from the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, a local military regiment, to discuss their studies and the regiment’s role in the Second World War.

Winnipeg a character all its own onscreen

Watch something shot in Winnipeg with a Winnipegger, and you will be treated to a live running commentary. We can’t help playing “spot the location.”

When we recognize that field/statue/mall/intersection/theatre, we have to say it. It’s practically civically mandated.

A friend told me she was at a film screening at which people literally applauded footage of the Mint. (That likely would have been 2005’s The Constant Gardener.)

Being excited about seeing Portage Place Mall at Christmastime in the trailer for Violent Night 2 — and then exclaiming, to your husband, “Oh, look, it’s Portage Place Mall at Christmastime!” — is not, I will admit, particularly cosmopolitan behaviour. In fact, I could be accused of suffering from a mild case of Podunkitis.

Jets’ brass warming up to El Nino?

Mike McIntyre 7 minute read Friday, Sep. 25, 2026

Decisions, decisions.

The Winnipeg Jets held their final dress rehearsal Friday night before the curtain rises next week on the new NHL season.

Unlike their first three exhibitions, this one in Denver featured competitive lineups that looked an awful lot like what we’ll see when the games start counting, with plenty of star power and veteran presence on both sides.

So what are we to make of the Jets’ 5-2 loss to the mighty Colorado Avalanche, who captured the Presidents’ Trophy last year and are once again a legitimate Stanley Cup contender?
