Nude painting of ex draws suspicion

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My boyfriend moved into my house and we were all cosy and happy for a few months until I got suspicious about his ex. He was away again last weekend “on business” and I wondered if he was with her somewhere. I was snoopy enough to go down to the basement and look through some of his stuff. Et Voila!

There was a carefully wrapped art piece in new brown paper that turned out to be a nude painting of his former wife, lovingly rendered and signed and dated by him, done not that long ago. (He fancies himself an artist.)

He’s been estranged from her for several years, but has made no move to divorce her. He still gives her money every month, although they had no children together. He’s mentioned casually they sometimes have coffee together now and talk about their mutual interest in art.

He told me when we met that she was “a real bitch” to him and cheated on him, so he threw her out. But, is that the truth of the matter? Do you think he still loves her? He never says the love word to me, but I thought it would come in time. He says he loved her to distraction and “almost madness” and was depressed for months after they split up.

— Tears of Fear, River Heights

Dear Tears: It’s time for a reality check. You let him move in with no declaration of love between you — like he was checking into a rehab clinic. Now he’s seeing his former love obsession again over coffees in public, or so he says, so there’s been some kind of forgiveness and reconciliation. Call me cynical, but those sketchy weekends away are probably not for anything other than monkey business. The painting you found served a purpose: it jolted you out of your place of denial.

This man can love passionately, but sadly he doesn’t love you.

You won’t find out what’s really going on unless you confront him. Tell him his reconnection with this woman, the coffees, the questionable weekends away and then seeing that recent painting make you suspicious that his feelings for her are still strong. Rock the boat! Ask him point-blank if this is actually the real story and study his face as he speaks. If you’ve been the bandage for his broken heart, or the way to elicit jealousy from her, he needs to pack his stuff and give you privacy to mourn and get on with your life.

If his ex-wife cheated on him, she doesn’t have a strong moral issue with cheating. In fact, she might enjoy cheating with him, now that you have him. You can bet she isn’t worried about your feelings. If he swears up and down she burned him and means nothing to him now, then ask him why he goes near the fire. Tell him you won’t be part of a triangle, even if it just looks like that’s the case, and ask him to find new digs.

Public servants and elections

We currently are in the midst of elections, mostly on the municipal level. Voters are reviewing policies and promises in anticipation of new programs and commitments that hopefully will enhance their daily life.

While those seeking political office live in anxiety during this time as they await their electoral fate, so too do many civil servants as election results will also determine their futures.

It is these civil servants who we rarely think of at election time.

Wab Kinew as ‘communicator in chief’

Paul G. Thomas 6 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

Premier Wab Kinew and his party have been riding high in the polls longer than normal for a government one year or less away from its first re-election contest. One reason is his ubiquitous, dominating communications presence as NDP leader and premier.

The argument here is that Kinew has supplemented his prerogatives as premier and party leader (such as appointing cabinet ministers and approving party nominations) with the skilful use of communications to advance his policy agenda, boost his personal popularity and maintain the competitive advantage of his party over the opposition Progressive Conservatives.

Communications has always been a significant part of politics and policy making. However, in the contemporary political and media environments, communications considerations have moved from the background to the foreground of decision-making by political parties, including when they are performing in the role of government. Campaigning and governing now overlap in what has been described as a permanent election campaign.

Political parties use communications strategies for several purposes: to establish an image of the leader which makes a positive emotional connection with voters; to promote a coherent message and to keep party members on message; and to gain favourable media coverage for its policies and other actions on almost a daily basis.

AI, animals and us

Jordan Laidlaw 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

It is now perhaps axiomatic to declare that artificial intelligence will revolutionize the world, as researchers and industry insiders are projecting the novel technology to become the greatest technological breakthrough in human history.

There has been a flurry of discussion in both our local and international contexts — and with good cause. We must remain steadfast to ensure our youth, local workforces, and environment are not negatively impacted by this burgeoning technology.

I wish to accentuate, however, a somewhat neglected area of public discussion around AI developments. Specifically, we urgently need to re-evaluate the ethos of humanity, particularly cognizant of the emergence of this digitally superintelligent species.

If artificial superintelligence (ASI) is ultimately achieved, leading academics theorize that these digital agents will be sentient, conscious, and astronomically more intelligent and powerful than us. In fact, numerous scholars believe AI to already possess some level of consciousness in its current iteration. This position is held by eminent evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, for example.

Furby Street residents fed up with inaction on drug houses

Carol Sanders 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:39 AM CDT

Anxious Furby Street residents contacted the city and their elected officials Friday to — once again — report people coming and going from a boarded-up house they call a dangerous “drug centre” and “den of thieves” that’s just steps away from a house under construction.

Linda Zak, who was holding a yard sale with a group of neighbours Friday morning, described the trouble the home attracts, while a woman slumped on the front steps and a man standing in the yard yelled to someone inside it.

“It is a drug centre,” said Zak, 77. “We know that. A couple of days ago, a person lit the front on fire. Now, as you look at it, you can see where the facade was burning and they were trying to harm people inside.”

“We’re very concerned about it being next to the home this man is building,” she said, pointing to the two-storey that’s nearly completed. The boarded-up house is in the 500 block of Furby.
