Sleeping with other people’s wives could be bad for your face

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I went to the bar prepared to mind my own business and have a few drinks on a Friday night. In came a guy I didn’t recognize who stood beside me at the bar. He bought a drink, knocked it back and made small talk. After his second drink, he grabbed me by the front of my jacket and said, “If you ever come near my wife again, I’ll knock all those big white teeth down your throat!” Then he saw security coming and ran out the door.

First, I don’t know who the guy is, and second, I see a lot of ladies for fun and sex and one of them could be his wife for all I know. He never gave his wife’s first or last name. He must think she would be my only woman and I would know all their names. Ha! The thing is, I’m a good-looking divorced guy, am currently single and I can go to bed with anybody I want.

So here’s the problem: that’s my favourite bar to meet women, and now this guy has his eye on me. I spent a lot of money on my “big white teeth” and I really don’t want to get beaten up. I’m a lover, not a fighter. If I took his wife home one night after the bar, that was her decision. I don’t force anybody to come with me. What should I do at this point? Why should I have to change bars when I know everybody there?

Dear Lover: It’s time to stop having sex with other people’s wives, especially those you don’t even know well enough to be aware they have a jealous husband. Now this guy has delivered his nasty message, he probably won’t come back. You’re probably safe inside the bar, but not outside in the parking lot.

Be aware, there’s also a spy in that bar watching you. In this case, the husband knew enough to come to this bar to find you. When he got in the door, he made a beeline for you, so he had a full description of who to look for from someone. He must have a male or female buddy who’s a regular there, or a staffer, and who watched the whole thing unfolding between you and his wife; or the wife may have diverted a beating by putting the blame on you for “harassing” her at the bar. Either way, the people at this bar are not your friends. Since you don’t know the spy you’re dealing with, get out of there before you start wearing your nose on a different part of your face.

Tyrel Bauer makes no apologies for the pugilistic piece of his path.

The Winnipeg Jets defenceman is ready to drop the gloves and throw down when the situation calls for it and he takes great pride in protecting his teammates.

It’s a big part of the reason Bauer will be among the 23 players submitted by the Jets on the opening-day roster on Monday.

“I’ve fought and clawed, both metaphorically and literally and now I just want to show that I can play as well,” Bauer said during a chat with the Free Press during training camp. “(Toughness) is always something that I have, it’s always something in my back pocket and something that I take a lot of pride in doing, for my teammates, for the city and the people who invest in this hockey club. That will never change.

The owner of a Notre Dame Avenue bathhouse is troubled after a man accused of planting a pipe bomb outside his club was granted bail.

Erik Lymen Olson, 59, was granted release following a contested bail hearing last Monday.

“I don’t think he should have got out with something like this — at all,” said Christopher Gregoire, owner of AQ Sauna.

Olson was arrested Sept. 12, one day after allegedly planting a pipe bomb outside the sex and lifestyle club.

Bison kicker Turner named captain, shows she belongs

Even on nights like this, Maya Turner can appreciate how far she’s come.

Though it feels like yesterday that the Manitoba Bisons kicker arrived on the scene with an unheralded right leg and a point to prove, these days the fifth-year student-athlete is lining up to split the uprights with a veteran boot and the added responsibility of being a team captain.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy, though.

It’s now four years ago that Turner ditched her NCAA Division 1 soccer career at Loyola University in Chicago to kick a different ball on the gridiron and signed with the Bisons, who were one of more than one hundred programs across North America that she sent tape to in hopes of realizing a new dream.

1 minute read Yesterday at 12:40 PM CDT

A man has been charged after a serious assault at St. Boniface Hospital on Saturday.

Just after 1 a.m. Sept. 26, two men were having an argument that escalated to a physical fight in which the victim sustained serious upper-body injuries, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday.

When police arrived, a 36-year-old man was being detained by security personnel. The incident didn't involve hospital staff and no one else was hurt, the release stated.

James Anthony Junior Clark, 36, was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily harm and two counts of violating a probation order.

Canada resorting to its tried and true playbook

In 1846, Britain faced an emergency influenced by the Irish famine, so leaders repealed the country’s “Corn Laws” and restrictions on imported food and grain, transitioning to a system of free trade.

This created a crisis in the then Province of Canada, which had relied on British “preferential” status to prop up its agricultural and resource industries.

As a result, Canada looked south for new markets and eventually negotiated a free trade agreement with the United States.

This required land to be acquired and converted for industrial use quickly, so Canada quickly dispatched Commissioner William Robinson to negotiate with Indigenous communities along Lake Huron and Lake Superior for land.
