Cancel cruise and swing back into wife’s arms

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My wife and I are former swingers — we stopped about 10 years ago. I did something terrible over the Christmas holidays: I told a big lie to my wife to get her to stop working and retire with me. I was mad, so I told her I was going travelling without her on a long trip and I would be “free as a bird” when I was on the cruise ship. She said, “Go right ahead!” So, I studied a bunch of cruises and booked one, but today I overheard my wife on the phone telling her best friend that she is going to feel free to sleep with someone else, too, when I’m away.

I know this is unfair, but I can’t stand the thought of her cheating on me. For me, having sex would just be a roll in the hay, but for her it would be somebody she really likes. It could be the end of us. That would kill me — she is the woman I really love. We used to be swingers in our early days, but we always did it as a couple and I could keep an eye on her and make sure it never got serious. She is still very good-looking and I’m in a panic. Should I tell her I lied about cheating or cancel my trip?

— Pushed Her Too Far, Windsor Park

Dear Pushed Her Too Far: Yes! You should confess you lied and tell her you planned the trip to get her to retire and spend time with you. She’s not ready to retire and she’s doing what she needs to do — continue working. How about cancelling the big trip and asking her to go somewhere with you on a smaller trip? She may not want to go anywhere with you right now. Don’t complain about that. She may even have had her eye on someone in particular (you trained her well with the swinging). At any rate, you would be a fool to take off on this long cruise. Try to win back her love and trust.

Theatre goes goblin mode

Ben Waldman 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

Although they star in an upcoming local production of the Scottish Play, goblin thespians Wug, Kragva and Moog left it to director Rebecca Northan to handle publicity and interviews.

Were they also scared to utter the real title — saying “Macbeth” inside a theatre is believed to be bad luck — aloud?

“The goblins don’t know anything about our superstitions,” says Northan, an actor-writer-improv artist who last season performed and directed Murder-on-the-Lake, an immersive murder-mystery, for the Shaw Festival.

Northan, who co-created Goblin:Macbeth with Bruce Horak and Ellis Lalonde, can’t speak for her folkloric co-workers, but says the Halloweenish trio were inspired to mount the show after being impressed by Shakespeare’s firm grasp on the realm of fantasy.

Winnipeg soldiers help search and rescue efforts in Wainwright

Kelly-Anne Riess 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:39 PM CDT

Eleven military search and rescue technicians from Winnipeg were deployed to Wainwright, Alta., following the fire that killed four soldiers and injured 39 others during a live-fire training exercise Saturday.

It was the largest mobilization of SAR techs, elite primary-care paramedics in the Royal Canadian Air Force, in recent memory, a military spokesperson told the Free Press.

Every SAR tech available from 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron, located at 17 Wing Winnipeg — even those off duty — were sent to CFB Wainwright.

The technicians, who are trained to jump from aircraft into extreme environments, parachuted onto the scene from a CC-130H Hercules airplane to provide care for those injured in the fast-moving grass fire that had engulfed a training area.

Be careful with old flame’s power games

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I just ran into the short-haired girl I was crazy in love with back in high school. She wore all black clothes, kind of looked like a guy, but used dark lipstick and dyed her hair different weird colours. She always looked like a scary, powerful woman and she loved to tease me, because I was shy back then.

She was standing there in the sun, and I liked her new look — blue-black hair, dressed in a black suit, hot-looking and powerful as ever! But after we started talking, she suggested we go catch up over a drink and lunch.

After eating and drinking a lot on my tab, she was a bit tipsy and confessed she already has a boyfriend she quite likes, because he doesn’t bow down to her.

To get even, I told her I had a girlfriend, “but that could change.” Then I paid the tab. She finally liked something about me!

Flourishing improv fest ready to make the ‘Peg laugh

Ben Waldman 5 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

When the first Winnipeg Improv Festival happened in 2000, its organizers had no idea what they were doing, or what the festival should look like.

After 25 years of making things up, they’ve mostly got it figured out, says co-artistic director Stephen Sim, who programs the festival with improv artist Caity Curtis.

Featuring a combination of local performers plucked from the Winnipeg alt-comedy universe and a roster of national and international guests, the Winnipeg Improv Festival traverses borders by mashing together new troupes to workshop, develop and present ephemeral, once-in-a-lifetime work to audiences at the Gas Station Arts Centre.

Sim doesn’t remember too many specifics about the first festival — he hardly slept and was in no state to take notes — but by the time the second edition came around, it became apparent that what made things felt “real” was the participation of improvisers from outside the city.
