Dump boyfriend on his bullying butt

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: Over Christmas, my boyfriend, who is 21, started disappearing from his Facebook, cellphone and email. When I finally got hold of him, I asked him why he could no longer be reached easily. He said he was teaching me a lesson, that I was calling too much, but “not giving him the right kind of loving he needs as a man.” He meant sex. He said that when he finally allows me to see him again, I would appreciate him and give him what he wants from me. I’m 18 and a good Mennonite and not ready to have sex. I know he’s trying to punish me so I’ll do what he wants. I told my one sister, who told our married sister what he was doing. She immediately told Mom and Dad. My dad was furious and he can be rough. He wants to punch my boyfriend’s face in. What do you think I should do? I don’t love him anymore, but I’m scared to break up. Should I talk to him one more time? — Not Stupid, East Kildonan

Dear Not Stupid: This guy is mean and nasty. You are only being “stupid” if you don’t get as far away from him as fast as you can. Tell him in an email you are finished, but you wish him well in life — even if you feel like saying angry words instead. Don’t give him the stimulus to come after you in a show of dominance and ownership. (He probably thinks he should be the one to decide on breaking up or not.) Do tell him your tough dad has gotten wind of the things he has said and done, and he’d be wise not to make any contact with you.

It’s doubtful he will bother you, because he is young enough not to like the sound of dad, and he is probably seeing someone else for sex already. That’s why he’s not seeing you anymore. It suits his ego to have you still on the line, though, and to know you’re suffering, so don’t mix with him beyond one talk online. Then block him from further communication.

Manitoba doctor denies working to revive Carberry ER in response to recruitment lawsuit

Erik Pindera 3 minute read 9:40 AM CDT

A Manitoba doctor has denied he was working as a recruiter after an Ontario doctor accused him of misleading him about a position at the Carberry hospital.

Dr. Klevis Iliriani, who worked at the hospital in Carberry from May to August 2024, filed his statement of claim in Court of King’s Bench earlier this year.

Iliriani, who lives in an Ottawa suburb, has alleged recruiters negligently misrepresented the job at the Carberry hospital and breached the terms of his contract, which resulted in less pay than promised.

His court filing names defendants Dr. Dave Maharajh and Barry Banek as the recruiters.

‘Quite a journey’: dozens move into transitional housing downtown

Carol Sanders 3 minute read Updated: 9:54 AM CDT

Dozens of residents have moved into transitional housing units in a former university building in downtown Winnipeg.

Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith said 42 residents have moved into suites on the third and fourth floors of a seven-storey building previously owned by Providence University College and Theological Seminary. There will be space for as many as 118 people who were in encampments or otherwise homeless.

The remaining units under renovation are expected to be ready and occupied in the coming weeks, Smith said.

“This has been two years in the making,” the minister said at a media event with residents, staff, neighbours and supporters. The building cost the province $24.4 million to purchase and renovate.

Art piece connects viewers to broader national landscape

WHAT IT IS: Copy Paperis a 2014 textile-based piece by Ontario-born, Winnipeg-based artist Kristin Nelson, currently on view at WAG-Qaumajuq as part of the exhibition Terra Cognita/Incognita.

Of the 125 works in the show — which uses historical and contemporary pieces from WAG-Qaumajuq’s permanent collection to explore how artists have represented the landscape over time and across cultures —probably the most attention-getting are the beautiful paintings of Canada’s lakes, plains, forests and mountains.

So, how does this seemingly modest, somewhat enigmatic work connect to Terra Cognita/Incognita’s larger themes?

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: In the middle of the exhibition, an antique desk holds several objects of beauty and utility, and this is where Copy Paper sneaks in, as something both “cognita and incognita,” known and unknown.

A Winnipeg man awaiting sentencing after admitting he strangled three cats to death and dumped two of their carcasses under a city bridge, has died, the Free Press has learned.

Randy Jensen, 25, pleaded guilty on May 13 to one count of wilfully causing injury or suffering to animals in connection to the 2024 killings.

He was scheduled to be sentenced in January.

“That’s not something that anybody wanted,” said Kristy Zamonsky, founder of Project Artemis Animal Advocates. “We were all hoping for justice through the courts.”

Woman who saved child, father from Red River uncomfortable with hero label

Scott Billeck 5 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 2, 2026

A Winnipeg woman who’s been hailed as a hero by police for saving a father and his young child from the Red River says she doesn’t feel like one.

“I’m a mom… and I would do it again,” said Jayclyn Morrissette, who was walking with her neighbour through St. John’s Park on Aug. 24 when they spotted a young girl flailing in the nearby river. “I was meant to be there and that was supposed to happen.”

Morrissette, who spoke to the Free Press Wednesday after police released details about the rescue, said she and her neighbour began looking for the child’s parents and found them at the nearby playground searching for her.

Morrissette waved them over. The father, who she said could not swim, jumped into the river first and immediately began to sink.
