Two beds needed for playtime and sleep

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My wife is going to break my back one day. She rolls over in bed at night and always rolls to get closer to me and I get boiling hot, so I move to escape. Last night I really hurt my back when I hit the floor (our bed is pretty high). Sometimes I have to get off my side of the bed and walk around and start back sleeping on her side, like an old-fashioned typewriter`. There is no use waking her up to yell at her about what she’s doing, as she’s not doing it on purpose.

I don’t want to move to the guest bedroom, but last night I limped down the hall, put some liniment on my back, took pain pills and went to the guest bedroom — an unhappy first for us — but I knew I would be safe sleeping there.

What can we do? We are newlyweds and I love her like crazy and love being near her naked in the bed, but not having her stuck to me. She feels really badly for what happened last night.

— Aching Back, Tuxedo

Dear Aching Back: This situation can only be happening because your wife is asleep behind you. She surfaces from sleep enough to be aware you are too far apart for her comfort, so she sidles over to get close to you. To stop this pattern, she will have to sleep on her favourite side, but facing off the bed. If this doesn’t work, you can buy two double beds and have an adult playpen which you can push apart in the middle at sleep time.

If you really want to be in the same bed all night, you can lower your existing bed to the floor over a thick carpet and thicker underlay, so when you do fall off it’s no big deal. If any readers have ideas for these colliding lovebirds, please write in.
