Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 22/02/2016 (3871 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I have this good friend I’m in love with and she doesn’t know it. I hang out with her and can call her any time I want. I have not made a move because I didn’t want to risk rejection and spoil the friendship. I found out she had eyes for me, too, but I guess she got tired of waiting. She went out with this other guy on Valentine’s Day. I am so jealous I can’t stand it, and I haven’t had a phone call or text from her since. We used to phone or text 10 times a day. What should I do?
— Big Loser, South End
Dear Big Loser: Before this guy has time to get into her heart, you have to make a dramatic move. Go over to see her and bring a Valentine you made yourself, and a flower. Ask her to go for a drive or a walk with you. Go to the nearest park. Turn to her and say, “I forgot to give you this.” Then give her the card and let her read it before giving her the flower. After she sniffs it, pull her into your arms and kiss her — put some real passion into it.
A little peck is not going to beat out this other guy who’s starting to chase her. Kiss her softly first, and then like you really mean it. Tell her you would like her to be your girlfriend. Usually, a guy doesn’t move from the first kiss to a relationship, but this is an emergency. Tell her you’ve been meaning to do that for months, but you didn’t want to spoil the friendship.
Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I knocked a chair over my brother-in-law’s head and he passed out. When he came to, he just wanted to go home. He hasn’t pressed any charges against me, but his wife (my sister) wants him to do it. I hit him because we were both drunk and he called my sister a whore. I was protecting her honour! Now she wants him to go after me and put me in jail for assault (as if it was my first time and I’d get nothing much). The truth is, I would be put away for a long time. What do you think?
— Hate Jail, Winnipeg
Dear Hate Jail: Speak to both of this couple separately and apologize for the assault. You’re lucky your brother-in-law woke up — you could have killed him. As for your sister and the language she’s willing to take from him, that’s her business.
I suggest you never see these two in a drinking situation again. It brings out bad language, anger, old hurts and violence. You’ve been to jail before, so you should know it’s much better to swallow your pride, apologize and get past this peacefully without charges.
