Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 09/10/2016 (3640 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I met a sweet musician at a local event. I went for drinks with him after. He was sexy and irresistible. We went to my place and made love. He stayed all weekend.

Then he left my house and went home to his wife and children! I found out because one of my best friend’s boyfriends knows the guy.

Apparently, he treats his wife like this all the time. I called him and yelled at him: “How could you do this, you %$@#*?” and he said he thought I knew. Does he think he’s so famous in this town everybody knows about him? I’m wondering if I should call his wife. What do you think? — Tricked, Winnipeg

Dear Tricked: Since this guy sleeps around so much, you would be better off to save your breath, call the doctor for an appointment and get checked for sexually transmitted infections. Perhaps he and his wife have an open marriage, or maybe she just puts up with him. You only had one “date” with him, so don’t feel you must get involved with his wife and family.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m falling into a pit of despair because my boyfriend has gone away to university and he’s not calling me. I only call him, and he’s short with me and can’t wait to get off the phone.

Do you think he’s finished with me? We had unprotected sex the night he left. I found out this morning I’m not pregnant. He’s coming home for Thanksgiving and staying a few extra days. How should I handle this. Please help! — Kicked to the Side? Tuxedo

Dear Kicked to the Side: College guys who really love their girlfriends back home don’t go away and not call them. Ask him today if this romance is over for him. Don’t be sweet and sexy to try to win him back. There are wonderful guys right here in Winnipeg for no-distance love, affection and sex, seven days a week. Who needs long-distance negligence?

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I completely agree with your advice to that young cowgirl (Lonely and Scared to Lose My BF) whose boyfriend wants her to get rid of her horse. My advice is to saddle up, leave him in his own dust and ride off into the sunset. I have personal knowledge of the devastation one can feel if they surrender their pet due to pressure from a potential mate.

My friend loved her horse and mirrored the enthusiasm and her love of the country lifestyle your reader expressed. Her fiancé was jealous of her love for her horse. One day she arrived home to find he had put her horse and tack up for sale! The new buyer arrived, and in a complete state of bewilderment and shock, she said goodbye to her four-legged love. She was miserable.

Once married, she quickly realized his infatuation for vehicles trumped his marital presence. He had his cars, and she was miserable and horseless. My advice is to stay true to your passion. There are so many horse clubs to get involved with, and she should seriously explore them. She will find a lot of like-mindedness there. I truly wish her happy trails as she keeps cinching up her saddle. — Horse Lovers are Stable People, Manitoba

Dear Horse Lover are Stable People: She married that jerk? That was one weak-willed woman. She should have put a stop to that sale when she got home, and if that didn’t go over, she could have called the police and told them her boyfriend had essentially stolen her horse and was selling it without permission.

If she had refused to go ahead and marry that creep, she would have had her self-esteem and her horse.

No one should give up a loved one — animal or human — to marry a person who is demanding that happen. In this case, the boyfriend committed a crime, and she could have nailed him for it.

Mike O’Shea summed it up best.

“That one doesn’t feel very good.”

Nor should it.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers started out hot Friday night, only to run out of gas down the stretch and allow the visiting Toronto Argonauts to steal a 30-28 victory.

A far-right canvassing push in Manitoba this month is raising concerns among Winnipeg residents.

Stickers promoting Nationalist-13, a men’s-only neo-Nazi group also known as NS-13 based primarily in Hamilton, Ont., have appeared in Winnipeg and parts of southern Manitoba. The stickers bear national socialist branding and messages such as “White Man, Fight Back” and “White Community, Political Action, Training and Fitness.”

Winnipeg writer Jess Woolford recently encountered an NS-13 poster on Pembina Highway.

“It was appalling,” Woolford said. “It has the Nazi death heads covering people’s faces. It was pretty disturbing to come across this … I just didn’t expect to see it so blatantly displayed in my neighbourhood.”

Jets’ brass warming up to El Nino?

Decisions, decisions.

The Winnipeg Jets held their final dress rehearsal Friday night before the curtain rises next week on the new NHL season.

Unlike their first three exhibitions, this one in Denver featured competitive lineups that looked an awful lot like what we’ll see when the games start counting, with plenty of star power and veteran presence on both sides.

So what are we to make of the Jets’ 5-2 loss to the mighty Colorado Avalanche, who captured the Presidents’ Trophy last year and are once again a legitimate Stanley Cup contender?

Flammable gas culprit of 2024 Transcona home explosion: police

Malak Abas 1 minute read Friday, Sep. 25, 2026

Flammable gas is believed to be the cause of a 2024 house explosion in Transcona that damaged neighbouring homes and displaced residents.

“As a result of the investigation and upon Crown review, the explosion is believed to be an isolated incident,” Winnipeg Police Service Const. Dani McKinnon said in an email Friday afternoon.

“There are no public safety concerns connected to this incident, and no criminal charges have been laid.”

The sudden blast happened in a bungalow on Camrose Bay on June 26, 2024. It levelled the home and caused significant damage to 22 other houses. At the time, it was described as “catastrophic” by the fire chief at the scene.

Travelling nearly 7,000 km from his home in France to Winnipeg gave Gabriel Zaranski a new perspective on warfare.

“It’s very different to speak about war in school (than) to speak with real people who (have fought) in a war,” he said. “We can feel the emotion when they speak … The testimony has more impact when it’s real soldiers.”

Zaranski is one of 14 Grade 12 students from Bayeux, a town in France’s Normandy region, in Winnipeg this week for a learning tour.

The students, who attend Lycée Arcisse de Caumont high school, met on Saturday with veterans from the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, a local military regiment, to discuss their studies and the regiment’s role in the Second World War.
