Hey there, time traveller!

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I’ve never been in a relationship before, and I’ve had my eye on a guy I used to work with. Simple, right? I should just send him a text or call and ask him out for coffee. Au contraire!

This situation is a little tricky.

Problem 1: I am very shy and awkward, especially with people I don’t know very well.

Problem 2: He used to be my boss (I didn’t want to stir the pot while we worked together).

Problem 3: I haven’t seen or talked to him in more than a year.

Problem 4: He has since moved to a town that is a two-hour drive away.

Should I try to go after him, or look for someone else? I keep thinking about him, but how would I invite him out if he lives two hours away? I’ve never asked someone out on a date before, and I have no idea if he has a girlfriend. We haven’t kept in touch. Is it too late?

— Awkward Turtle, St. Vital

Dear Turtle: If he’s single and free — you must casually ask him right away — there’s a chance he’s lonely in his new town, and might really enjoy connecting with you. So start getting active.

Come out of your shell far enough to contact him on Facebook. Post stuff you know he will like and comment on it in a private message to him. Use any excuse to get him on the phone and add a warmer dimension to your interactions.

After a few weeks, find a fun event attend near him and ask him to meet you there. If he’s not willing to make the effort, he’s definitely not interested in you.

If you just tell him to call you when he’s in Winnipeg, it could be a long wait. And you still wouldn’t know if he liked you romantically or if he was just catching up with an old friend from work.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m lacking in male friends because I’m good-looking, and women like me. I’m also outspoken on business, religion and politics.

My sister told me to “tone it down’ if I want more male friends, but I can’t seem to do that.

Women are just fine with me the way I am, but men get competitive very quickly, and I don’t back down. I would like to have some buddies, but I don’t want to change.

— Mr. Competitive, Tuxedo

Dear Competitive: You need tougher buddies so you can pick on people of your own size and intelligence.

Choosing friends from a pool of more aggressive, athletic guys in a team or a sport like weightlifting might work.

The gentler, soft-spoken guys are not a good fit for you.

Trying to be buddies with guys who are softer than you will only lead to competitiveness or avoidance on their part.

Choose men who are just as outgoing, combative and good-looking. They won’t need to compete with you to prove anything.

Province invests $3.8M in culinary arts training facility for francophone high school students

Kelly-Anne Riess 2 minute read Yesterday at 12:10 PM CDT

A new dedicated culinary arts training facility will give francophone high school students a place to learn the trade in French.

The Manitoba government announced this week that it is providing $3.8 million toward the purchase of a property at 170 Marion St. and beginning design work for its renovation.

The facility will be the first dedicated vocational education site operated by Division scolaire franco-manitobaine, and the first fully French-language culinary arts program for Grade 11 and 12 students, preparing them for work in the restaurant and service sector.

“French-language education is a fundamental part of Manitoba’s identity and strength,” Education Minister Tracy Schmidt said in a news release. “It is an exciting step that will help strengthen both the francophone community and our skilled workforce.”

Winnipeg Police Service recognizes, honours residential school survivors as Orange Shirt Day approaches

Malak Abas 3 minute read Yesterday at 7:27 PM CDT

Winnipeg Police Service members lit a sacred fire outside of their North District Station in recognition of residential school survivors ahead of the upcoming Orange Shirt Day.

“We know that the relationship between policing and Indigenous communities has not always been one of trust,” WPS Chief Gene Bowers told visitors at a gathering outside of the station Sunday afternoon.

“We cannot change that history, but we can acknowledge it, we can learn from it, and we can take responsibility for how we move forward.”

The sacred fire, guided by elder Mike Calder, will burn for 24 hours at the Sinclair Street station, and then be allowed to extinguish naturally. It’s the second year the WPS has lit a sacred fire in recognition of residential school survivors — last year, the fire was lit outside of WPS headquarters on Smith Street.

Four Jets clear waivers to join Moose

Ken Wiebe 2 minute read Saturday, Sep. 26, 2026

The Winnipeg Jets organizational depth has yet to take a hit on the waiver wire.

On Saturday afternoon, all four players exposed to waivers — defenceman Isaak Phillips and forwards Nikita Chibrikov, Noah Gregor and Parker Ford — cleared, which means they can be assigned to the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

Owing to injuries to captain Adam Lowry and winger Cole Perfetti, both Chibrikov and Ford started last season on the NHL roster but spent the bulk of last season with the Moose.

Chibrikov, chosen in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft, has dealt with multiple lower-body injuries during the prior two seasons and is still working his way back to peak form.

Special teams woes hurt Bombers in loss to Argos

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read Saturday, Sep. 26, 2026

THEY’VE been the most consistent of the three phases in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers arsenal this season.

A port in the proverbial storm, throughout this topsy-turvy campaign of ups-and-downs, the special-teams units have been supplying strength to a group that is still searching for consistency with only four games left in the regular season.

That’s what made this momentary lapse so costly in a 30-28 loss to the Toronto Argonauts on Friday at Princess Auto Stadium.

“We didn’t keep up our end of the bargain. And that hurts our football team, hurts our chances of winning games,” said Blue Bombers special teams ace Tanner Cadwallader. “And if we want to win close games. we’ve got to be a whole lot better than that. And we will. We’re going to come in (on Saturday for the film session) and go through it with a fine-tooth comb and just work a little bit harder.”
