Hey there, time traveller!

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I’m unhappily married and I’ve met another woman who takes my breath away. My wife found out and told me if I wasn’t prepared to get rid of this girlfriend, she would kick me out before September and raise our kids all by herself. She’s a tough woman and she means it.

She says I can’t expect to be in and out of her house, seeing the kids, because if I don’t choose her, she’ll never want to see my cheating face again! So, I have to give up my girlfriend immediately and make it up to my wife.

Don’t get me wrong. I respect my wife, her professional career and the excellent mother she is. But she has never respected me as a blue-collar worker.

She did chase and marry me, though. I believe she did because I was “strong and handsome” (her words at the time). I was also romantic and would sing her to sleep after making love. I’m not so good-looking now.

I think she has tired of me. She stopped talking to me much and directs all her attention to our children. I always feel lonely and left out around her.

Eight years and three kids later, I met my girlfriend and I feel wonderful around her. I also love my kids and they love me, and I do lots with them; I teach them to build and have taken them to all their activities. I don’t know what to do. My wife’s threatening to take away my beloved children. Can she do that?

— Devoted Father, southern Manitoba

Dear Devoted: It sounds like you’ll either get divorced now or later, and her threat will stand. Before you say anything to your wife, hire the best divorce lawyer you can and talk about the threat she’s made. Know your rights and be prepared to fight for them.

You’re a good father and the only reason she’d try to take the children is to get back at you. Divorce laws and good divorce lawyers are there to a make sure parents can’t vindictively use children as pawns.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My girlfriend tells me the reason she doesn’t want to have a full sex life is because she’s asexual — not sexually attracted to me or anyone.

She’s fine to cuddle, and often is the initiator, but she doesn’t want to go all the way “not now and not ever.” We’re not teenagers — we’re both in our mid 20s.

I really like her and keep trying to convince her she isn’t asexual, but she says: “Oh, yes I am. I should know.” I think she may be lying, but I can’t figure out for what reason. What do you think?

— Always Frustrated, Wolseley

Dear Frustrated: Stop trying to make a convert! It pays to believe people when they tell you about their sexuality. You’re no asexual so you need to say farewell, and give up trying to convince her she doesn’t know her own mind and body. Let her find someone else who just wants to cuddle, and that’s it.

As you say — you’re not a teenager anymore. This is such a waste of your time! The large majority of people are not asexual, so the numbers are clearly on your side.

Imagine if you found a new girlfriend you really loved and you both thought sex was great and there was never any hassle like this. Hurray!

It’s your ego that makes you want to convert this woman, and it’s keeping you stuck in an unsatisfying relationship.

You’re a solid, loyal sister, so worry not

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I ran into my sister’s husband at the bar recently. He was drinking with a bunch of people from his work. I noticed he was sitting close to a young woman, with his arm around her.

I just nodded without a smile as I slowly passed them. I kept on going, but he knew I saw them together. A few minutes later he came over — obviously drunk — and said, “You’re a good girl! You won’t say anything to your sister, will you?” Ha! I looked at him and said, “Of course I’m going to say something!”

My loyalty will always be to my sister. I phoned my sis in my car and blabbed. She tried to laugh it off, but she’s gone silent since — not answering my calls or messages. So apparently now I’m the troublemaker? That’d be just her style! What should I do?

Man accused of killing five family members fires second legal team, but murder trial won’t be delayed, judge warns

Dean Pritchard 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:44 PM CDT

A Manitoba man accused of killing five family members is once again looking for new lawyers to represent him at trial.

But Ryan Manoakeesick will stand trial, with or without a lawyer in April 2027, a judge warned him Thursday.

“I want to be clear, Mr. Manoakeesick, that the trial dates that have been set are going to remain,” King’s Bench Justice Candace Grammond told him. “Those trial dates are effectively written in stone.

“You may think that is a long time in the future, but in a trial of this kind you need to make sure you have appropriate representation and you will be ready to attend to the matter on that date.”

Jets new backup Stevenson ‘stoked’ to be in tandem with Skinner

Mike McIntyre 6 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 30, 2026

It didn’t take long to get the dirt on the newest member of the Winnipeg Jets.

Meet Clay Stevenson, who has no problem if you prefer to refer to him by his long-standing nickname of “Mud.”

“You know, Clay is in the mud, and there you go. That’s it, right there,” Stevenson said Wednesday with a laugh. “I got it in juniors when I was playing in Coquitlam, and kind of stuck ever since.”

Stevenson is now hoping to make a name for himself in a city that, quite fittingly, translates to “muddy water” in Cree. The 27-year-old from Alberta was placed on waivers by the Washington Capitals and claimed by the Jets, who were looking to clarify a goaltending situation which was as murky as the Red River.

Woman took ‘meaningful’ responsibility after disposing of body: lawyer

Dean Pritchard 4 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 30, 2026

A woman who was threatened with death if she didn’t help dispose the body of a Mexican man murdered in the basement of a North End home should serve no more jail time, a judge has been told.

Devlin Langlois, 25, has pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in the March 2025 killing of 28-year-old Diego Moscoza.

“By pleading guilty, Ms. Langlois has already taken meaningful accountability for her actions,” defence lawyer Joshua Rogala told King’s Bench Justice Candace Grammond at a sentencing hearing Monday.

He urged the judge to sentence Langlois to the equivalent of 14 months already served, plus two years supervised probation.
