Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My girlfriend has a disgusting habit of talking to me while she’s preparing food. She talks, and spit droplets are flying all over the food. It makes me sick! I don’t know how to tell her to keep her mouth closed when she’s standing over food, unless she wears a mask.

Hey there, time traveller!

To make matters worse, while she’s eats, she’s an open-mouthed talker. She needs to chew, swallow and then talk. I don’t need her food flying over the table onto my plate from her mouth!

— Not a Germophobe, North End

Not a Germophobe: It’s difficult to have the “stop spitting when you eat” conversation with someone outside the family unit. You can tell your kids to chew with their mouths closed, but girlfriends will be hurt.

For now, you can get away with putting on a mask first, and handing her one. Say pleasantly, “Honey, you’re a bit of a spitter, so please put it on.”

If she gets mad or hurt, just back off getting together again when prepping and eating meals at home are involved. Takeout food, eaten in the park or a backyard, or in the living room away from the dining room table, could work. Or, just take full control of the food you cook before she arrives.

As for your girlfriend chewing and talking, say in a gently amused way, “I can see your tonsils when you chew and talk at the same time!” You’re doing her a favour by correcting this behaviour, as other people who don’t know her and care about her may dislike the habit, and avoid her.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My dad is bad news. I live at home and recently started dating a cute guy, and my father is already “on me” to bring him home. He wants to give him the third degree, so I try to pretend he’s not a real boyfriend. Dad isn’t buying it.

My dad is a bit old-school, and he wants me married and well-looked after — and having grand-babies for him. I’m only in my early 20s. This is too much expectation for anyone my age! So, I’ve been doing the only thing I can do — sneaking. I was managing this well, because we work together. Then Dad found out about him from the family snitch — my younger sister. Now, my father really wants to meet him.

My mother? Not so much. She doesn’t like my dad’s attitude either. What now?

— Dad Demanding Audience, West End

Dear Dad Demanding: Try to work this intro through Mom. She understands your father. Ask Mom to meet the guy for 10 minutes at the door when Dad’s not around. Let Mama sing his praises if she likes him, and then let him come by to pick you up for another quick date when Dad’s there — like going for an ice cream — and bringing some home for the parents.

Kiss the new boyfriend goodbye a block away so there’s nothing going on when you get back to your house. Gradually let Dad get used to the guy coming over. This may not be your true love, so try to keep it casual for everybody’s sake. For instance, refer to him as “my friend from work,” and not “my boyfriend” to your dad — until you know how much you care about this guy.

Unsafe conditions force Sea Bears, Honey Badgers into winner-take-all CEBL final in Winnipeg Saturday

Joshua Frey-Sam 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 2:49 PM CDT

BRAMPTON — The Canadian Elite Basketball League’s new Finals format lasted one minute and 46 seconds.

And it’s possible even that was too long.

What was supposed to be a historic best-of-three series between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers will now return to the league’s previous format of a single-game elimination. Wednesday’s Game 1 at the CAA Centre in Southern Ontario was cancelled shortly after tip-off due to condensation on the court, which made the playing surface unsafe for competition.

The championship will flip to the Manitoba capital for a single, winner-take-all contest at Canada Life Centre on Saturday (2:30 p.m.).

Wyatt vows to ‘absolutely’ continue serving as city councillor despite latest sex-crime charges

Joyanne Pursaga 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 5:35 PM CDT

Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt vowed Thursday to continue doing his job after more criminal charges were laid against him this week, while the mayor called for “better tools” to address elected officials who face serious allegations.

Wyatt, 56, was charged Monday with sexual assault and administering a noxious substance in an October 2023 incident. He was previously charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious substance in March, based on allegations tied to a 2025 gathering.

On Thursday, Wyatt arrived at city hall and quickly walked to his office at 10:20 a.m., nearly an hour after the East Kildonan-Transcona community committee meeting he planned to attend was scheduled to begin.

He answered few questions from reporters.

Signs the Carney approach is working

Editorial 4 minute read Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026

It was, if nothing else, a glowing review in trying times.

Matt Winkler, the editor in chief emeritus of Bloomberg News, spoke last week on Bloomberg Business News Daily about a recent Bloomberg analysis of the performance of the Canadian economy, and this country as a target for investment

“This is one of the greatest periods for overseas investment in Canada that we’ve seen in the century, and it may be unprecedented, because we have to wait for the rest of the year. … Money is pouring into Canada like we have not seen from everywhere. Stocks and bonds are the obvious beneficiaries,” Winkler said. He argued that Canada is both liked and seen as reasonable.

“The point is… Canada since Mark Carney became prime minister in 2025, has outperformed everyone in America and also the Eurozone and anywhere in the world. The 10 largest stock markets in the world, Canada appreciated the most, more than 40 per cent. … Its bond market is also doing great, partially because the inflation rate in Canada, unlike the Eurozone or America, is actually trending lower, and is outperforming both the Eurozone and the U.S.”
