Guys at work off limits

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I’m not the office bicycle, but I do develop crushes on guys at work. It’s just that I work the evening shift — 4 p.m. to midnight — so my whole social life has to be at work, and I have a strong sex drive. By my count, I have had five crushes at work, if you count the cute young guy I’m hot for right now. Before you get the idea I have casual sex with all my crushes, you’re wrong. I just do a lot of fantasizing, staring and drop some hot hints about seeing them outside of work.

I just do a lot of fantasizing, staring and drop some hot hints about seeing them outside of work.

Last week this young guy, who it turns out has no class, whispered in my ear, “I have a girlfriend already, but I can meet you out at my car at break for some fun,” and then wiggled his eyebrows. I said, “Sure!” and wiggled my eyebrows back, and then let him go sit and freeze his butt in the car for 30 minutes while I sat in the lunch room with my girlfriends and laughed. Serves him right!

What do you suggest? I really need a hot man for sex and romance, but have no time.

— Need a Boyfriend, Industrial Park in Winnipeg

Dear Need a Boyfriend: What are you doing on the two days a week you have off — sleeping? That is prime time to focus on romance. For people on awkward schedules, online personals are the best way to go, so line up three dates a day — lunch, coffee and happy hours — on your days off where you can both “interview” each other. Of course, you can talk to prospects online any day before you’re off to work, and possibly even squeeze in a few lunches, but lay off the guys at work, totally! You may laugh, but you’re getting yourself a bad reputation. People often talk loosely when they have no emotional investment and you have a mean mouth yourself.

Collisions send people to hospital; one fatality

2 minute read Yesterday at 10:42 AM CDT

Five people are in hospital following a two-vehicle collision on Monday at the corner of Pembina Highway and Plaza Drive in which three pedestrians were struck.

On Sept. 28, just after 4:30 p.m., a Ford Fusion was travelling northbound on Pembina Highway through the Plaza Drive intersection with a green light when it was struck by a westbound Honda Fit that failed to stop for a red light at Plaza Drive. The Honda Fit mounted the sidewalk, striking three young children who were with an adult.

The three children were transported to hospital in stable condition with minor injuries. The driver of the Honda, a woman in her 70s, and the passenger, a man in his 80s, were transported to hospital in unstable condition. They were both upgraded to stable condition. The driver was issued a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Traffic Division is investigating.

Stuart Skinner is quick to admit that he wasn’t always wired this way.

As the Winnipeg Jets new starting goalie prepares for his fifth NHL season, Skinner conceded that the accountability aspect that is now synonymous with his character took some time to build up.

“As I grew up and got older, you go through certain things in life that either build character or make things worse for you. It depends on your choice and your decision,” Skinner said during a recent conversation with the Free Press. “I learned it through trial and error. I learned that, sometimes, it’s hard to get honest with yourself… For me, it’s definitely been a road for me to get to a place like this.

“It definitely is one of my pillars. Accountability is so important because that brings you into a spot of what you’re going to do next. It’s easy to let yourself off the hook. I’m more in the business of putting myself on the hook.”

Storylines aplenty as Jets’ regular season set to begin

Ken Wiebe and Mike McIntyre 8 minute read 6:25 PM CDT

If the Winnipeg Jets get their way over the course of the coming months, this 84-game redemption tour will extend beyond the regular season.

For the time being, the focus of this group is to leave the disappointment of a 26th-place finish in the rearview mirror and to get back to playing the style that allowed them to be in the Stanley Cup playoffs three consecutive springs before falling eight points short last April.

“We’re just ready for a fresh start where we’re looking ahead, and we’re excited to get the season underway,” captain Adam Lowry said Thursday. “Obviously, a short training camp but I feel like we got up to speed.”

The Boston Bruins will be Friday’s opponent (7 p.m.) in this 16th season opener for the Jets since the franchise relocated back in 2011, and the storylines surrounding the club are plentiful.

Bombers coach happy to be back at work after backbreaking loss to Argos

Taylor Allen 6 minute read Tuesday, Sep. 29, 2026

It’s the first practice day after a backbreaking loss.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are in a challenging predicament with four games remaining — starting Saturday on the road against the Montreal Alouettes (11-3) — that leaves their playoff aspirations far from solidified.

And yet, head coach Mike O’Shea makes his way behind the podium, looks out at a room of reporters and is grinning ear to ear.

Why so happy?

Ferraro gets call-up to the Jets

Mike McIntyre 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:56 PM CDT

Landon Ferraro vividly recalls the moment his NHL career came to an extremely painful end — Oct. 20, 2017, in downtown Winnipeg.

“My last play was a breakaway on Connor Hellebuyck,” Ferraro told the Free Press this week.

“I tried to poke the puck past the first D. It was me and (Dustin) Byfuglien chasing it down. I thought he was going to throw me across the ice, so I tried to cut in on him, and he moved. I overextended, and I literally ripped my abductor off the bone and gave myself a hernia.”

Ferraro — at the time playing forward for the visiting Minnesota Wild — said he managed to get off a weak shot that hit the Jets goaltender square in the chest. But his 77th appearance in the big leagues would be his last following previous stops with Detroit (which drafted him 32nd overall in 2009) and Boston.

Critical mineral development: Grid Metals promotes southeast Manitoba cesium deposit

Gabrielle Piché 3 minute read 8:18 PM CDT

An exploration company says it’s found the second-largest cesium deposit to be developed in the Western world — and it’s looking to mine in southeastern Manitoba.

Cesium is used in the defence sector, solar panels, internet and phone networks and GPS satellites, among other things. Canadian and United States governments have both deemed it a critical mineral.

It’s rare: just six cesium deposits have been found globally, according to the company behind the Manitoba site.

Grid Metals, a Toronto-based firm, spent October 2025 through March drilling holes in land 130 kilometres east of Winnipeg, at its Falcon West property.
