Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I love my best friend’s wife and recently I have started desiring her big time. She doesn’t want to cheat on her husband, but they’re always fighting. The other day she grabbed me in a spontaneous hug. Fifteen minutes later we were headed for the bedroom, and she stopped it. She ran away crying, saying that it was “her fault,” she was sorry and she wanted to keep her marriage.
I feel guilty about him, but I want her so badly. She hasn’t phoned me since and she used to phone me every day.
— Broken Heart, Weston
Dear Broken Heart: You need to give up on her now. Some day, if that marriage splits apart, she may come back to you. As for your buddy — her husband — you need to cool that relationship as well. You can maybe do the drift off thing, the way guys do with each other. If he asks you point-blank why you don’t want to be friends anymore, say: “I recently started feeling attracted to your wife and am staying away. You are lucky to have her.” He won’t argue with your decision.
