Leave garbage at the curb

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: Please tell the psychology major calling herself Flunked the Practical that she is being verbally abused. I have a friend whose ex-husband treated her the same way. He would pass off his insults as “just kidding.” She took this kind of verbal abuse from him for more than 30 years. I’m no psychology major, but it became obvious to me he was treating her with disdain and using insults to hurt her psyche. Their children, two boys, now men, treat her the same way their father did. Thankfully, a few years back her husband opted to go on a trip without informing her. She finally saw daylight, contacted her lawyer and got out of the relationship. She has been a much happier person since then.

Flunked the Practical could confront her husband about the digs hurting her feelings, but if this is his real nature I can’t see him improving himself. She should have a lawyer picked out and leave the guy before it’s too late and her personality gets shot down completely.

— Thanks for Listening, Winnipeg

Dear Thanks for Listening: There is a lot of truth in that old saying: “When you take the garbage out to the curb, you don’t bring it back in, and open it up.” Flunked the Practical needs to set herself free and leave her abuser at the curb. That husband has years of practice mocking and verbally beating her up, and he’s gotten away with it. She needs to break up with him and exchange her abuser for a gentle man.
