‘She was looking to destroy me’: convicted harasser faces new charges

When Agnieszka Ciochon-Newton moved into the 55-plus apartment building on Stradbrook Avenue last year, she came across as “timid, soft-spoken and sensitive,” said building manager Tanya Owen.

Little did Owen know the meek-looking 58-year-old woman would soon turn her life and the lives of many of her tenants upside down and threaten her career and family.

“She was looking to destroy me for a simple tenant disagreement,” Owen said Thursday.

Court records show Ciochon-Newton was arrested earlier this month and charged with seven counts of criminal harassment, two counts of uttering threats and one count each of fraud, breaking and entering, attempting to obstruct justice, intimidation of a justice official, mischief and defamatory libel.

WINNIPEG - Manitoba's government said Thursday the province will be sticking with daylight time year-round, making it the latest jurisdiction to move away from twice-annual time changes. Here's a look at where things stand across Canada:

British Columbia said in March that it was moving to permanent Pacific daylight time. The change also means that parts of northeastern B.C., which have been on mountain standard time year round, are now in alignment with the rest of the province.

Alberta also switched to permanent daylight time this year in what it calls Alberta time. The change means it now has the same time as Saskatchewan year round.

Saskatchewan has been on permanent central standard time since 1966.

Gunnn comes out blazing to claim Gold Cup

ELSTON Gunnn fired both barrels out of the gate in the 69th running of the $50,000 Gold Cup on a rainy Wednesday evening when wiener dogs were running everywhere at Assiniboia Downs, and likely earned himself a championship in the process.

Named after an early Bob Dylan stage name, the three-year-old gelding by Hollywood Derby (G1) winner Mo Town used his speed early in the 1 1/8-mile race, opening a clear lead under jockey Shavon Townsend and getting a breather for the first half-mile before being pressured by favourite Go Go Boss down the backstretch, through the final turn and all the way to the wire.

No matter how hard he tried, Go Go Boss could not get by for trainer Robertino Diodoro. And while those two were going hoof-to-hoof on the front end through the final turn, 43-1 Saskatchewan-bred Al Reichert, trained by Robert Henson, was making a huge move four-wide on the turn. That set the rivals up for a thrilling stretch battle.

When the smoke cleared, Elston Gunnn was in front by a nose over Go Go Boss, with Al Reichert a head further back in third.

For generations, Canada-U.S. trade was considered almost a fact of geography. The two countries share the world’s longest undefended border, deeply integrated supply chains and a century of commercial relationships.

Canadian manufacturers depend on American customers. American manufacturers depend on Canadian suppliers. Energy, agriculture, automotive production and countless other industries operate across the border as though it barely exists.

That isn’t going to change dramatically, even in the midst of a bitter trade war unleashed by the U.S. president.
